internet banking systems are often unavailable with varying error codes that mean nothing to a layman from hours after 00:00 until the next morning (same day - 07:00). The error experienced that prompted this post is - Technical Error: Please try again later. Wow, poor verbosity.

Its not just SB. I have been using Nedbank internet banking ever since it was part of Beltel (a blast from the past) and about 1 session in 5 is terminated by "An error has occurred". Since I often do batch payments this way, it is annoying to complete a whole batch, click on "pay" and have this error occur. The Nedbank helpdesk are clueless.

Yuo you are correct both banks are still running DOS... they most probably still think 640k ram is way to much :) Sorry couldn't resist...

What gets me even more is the fact that tansfering money from you cheque account to your credit card, will not reflect for at least 48 hours....

Then why are you still using them.

FNB cheaper, instant inter bank transfers, Planned notified downtime, EBucks, I could go on.

And yes I have previously had accounts with Standard and Nedbank.

Best decision I made was to move to FNB.

FNB also has those errors too though....but i think they do it for a reason.

i've once tried to do something, but every time i made a small error (like for changing a password, you MUST use a special character, whatever)
Instead of saying "You entered X detail incorrectly", they rather give you a generic "error"

I think it is to stop scam artists who don't have the correct info, from knowing exactly what is entered wrong.

I still love FNB though =)

Since change controls for most banks are scheduled for Sundays (when the systems experience the lowest volumes), it shouldnt really be unexpected, but sometimes the impact analysis is not entirely correct and users are impacted; but thats why they do it when people are less likely to be using the systems anyway.

I find most of the technical problems with the banks is due to communications, like atm's and speedpoints not being able to connect to the banks network.

I generally find that at Standbank anything you do is a mission and everything takes 48 to 72 hours. I recently had an incident where I was stuck in Cradock with a petrol card that bounced despite my transferring funds into the account from another Standard Bank account.

Turns out that despite transferring the funds online on a Thursday, the funds were there but were not in available funds because the 48 Hours fell on a weekend. Of course I was sent from pillar to post around the call centers: Card Division, Electronic Banking, Telephone Banking, Savings Division and then Technical Support for Online Banking - Needless to say I paid for the petrol using an FNB card in the end without hassles.

But back to the topic, I reckon Standard Bank doesn't take online banking nearly as seriously as it should. Its almost like its an after thought. Compounded by the fact that you have to pay exorbitant fees to use it and then over and above that transaction fees for the online transactions is a total jip. Then the best they can offer after hours is a pre-recorded IVR system that inevitably gets it wrong and kicks you back out at card division even though you never called them in the first place.

What Transaction Fees for online transactions?

I've been with them for quite a while now and for about 300+ online transactions I've never once seen a fee associated with it...

Been with FNB for a while and I've never had a problem... I suggest switching :)

I find Nedbank has the better online login system. FNB ok too - especially for that Instant Accounting app

I must agree that Nedbank's security is excellent if a bit tiresome. They now send SMS every time you log on, as well as the PIN when you add a beneficiary or make a one-off payment. But beware making a mistake when you enter your profile, pin and password. If you are overseas, then you are basically stuffed since it requires a visit to a branch to rectify the block.
