I have a bit of a connundrum...

It started about 3 weeks ago, internet was running fine and then there was an eskom power outage for about an hour, when the power came back on - the internet went up again as normal, until a couple hours later. When I got home from work and began browsing, the internet started to just die on me. All traffic would suddenly become sluggish and then in a matter of minutes the connection would drop completely.

I filed a fault with Telkom, and they sent someone through who came and had a look - he said he fixed something and then he left. Not another hour after he left, there was another power outage and when it came back on, my ADSL lights weren't syncing at all - about 3 hours later they were syncing again and everything appeared fine, again until I started browsing... The same issue then occurred with my line dropping.

The next day I phoned Telkom about it and spoke to someone there, he seemingly reset the port and told me that he can't see any issues his side and that it was likely a modem or ISP issue.

So I contact my ISP and they confirm that it's not their side.

I then spend some time in my router and notice that I'm getting 80 000 upstream errors in a few minutes, this seems fishy and my assumption is that maybe surge related to the power outage damaged the router. So I dig out my old telkom router from 2003 and plug it in. This old router has to be dialed up to ADSL via the computer and not the router, so I do that - everything runs perfectly for the two weeks that I use it, only issue is that I need the router to be dialed up and have wireless connections.

So I order a new router, a TP-link - assuming that the above confirms Telkom's suggestion that it's the router.

I set it up and it runs fine for a few hours, until I start browsing heavily again - then the exact same thing happens where the line drops randomly.

So now I've clearly wasted R600 on a router I didn't really need to get, and find myself in a situation where I almost know that Telkom are going to say that it's not their fault as the guy on the phone suggested, when clearly it is their fault. There must be a line issue or something, surely?

The important part to note to me, is that the connection works fine when dialed up via a computer, but when the connection is established through the router it drops.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I would actually remove the dialling up from the computer from the equasion. Have you checked with Telkom or your ISP to determine the attenuation on your line? If there is a noisy line, you could get these symptoms. Perhaps your POTS filter is to blame; you can authenitcate fine because there is not much data transfer involved with that, but when the data load increases, the dropped packets become an issue and the connection is lost.

POTS filters are about R50 from a Telkom shop.

Thanks for your reply.

When I spoke to the Telkom guy on the phone, he checked my line and said the attenuation was good and wasn't an issue. Not sure how legitimate that was.... My line typically gets full speed most of the time, until it has one of the episodes described above, where it drops.

I think it's the POTS filter that I removed yesterday to replace with the splitter that came with my new router...

Hi There,
You can plug the router direct in to the Telkom outlet and see if it still occurs. If it does then the POTS is fine.
The splitter that came with the router is just that it is not a POTS filter. You will still need a POTS to work properly.

Tim

I hate to sound like a complete newbie here... But I'm looking at my cable and I'm wondering whether I'm looking at the POTS or something else... Basically my telkom line comes to a point where it merges with a splitter (or could be the POTS filter?) - Where it merges, it's a solid connection, not one that can be removed, then that box leads to the splitter I use.

I'd still appreciate if someone could address the fact that my internet works 100% when the connection is dialed up from the computer, and that the connection only drops when the router dials. It's something that I'm really struggling to comprehend. It's not even like there's periods of slower access, everything is just 100% this way. But as soon as the router is the one connecting, up to 5 disconnects and required restarts in 30 minutes.

I've logged another fault report with Telkom in the mean time, hopefully they will get back to me quicker than last time...
