Hi all, ok im sick and tired of mwebs bull sh*t throttling, now they even throttle gaming traffic (WTF), so i have a big decision to make.

I either go for Afrihosts 1Meg Business which is uncapped and unshaped (Bronze) for R397 incl Line rental or I go for the regular 2Meg which is uncapped and shaped (Silver) for R497 incl Line rental.

My profile:

-Heavy downloader
-Gamer
-Streamer
-Current usage 160GB MWEB 1Meg UC (throttled to death) - R488

Any suggestions would be great.

PS: I dislike Openweb so thats a no-no.

IMHO, seeing that AH JHB IPC region are having capacity issues, it would be best to go business until they upgrade IPC, which will prob only be next year, then change to normal uncapped, which is as easy as a few clicks in clientzone.

Openweb excluded there remain two choices.
Afrihost:
Recommended but there are some issues but the ease of starting, ending or temporary suspending the account for up to six months is a winner!
Telkom. People seems to recommend them more and more by the day.

Moved from Afrihost to Telkom and very happy, especially with my 25% discount. I'm now getting a 2Mbps uncapped account for not much more than a 1Mbps. Also with the line upgrades I'm soon going to be on 4Mbps and its only going to cost me R345pm.

There is a whole thread dedicated to the 25% discount.

I will be honest and say I get mostly 1.5Mbps on my line but with the current upgrades happening thats normal

Not happy with the idea of going to TI, why did you move from AH?

Hi Rickster
Both would probably be fine. I'm with AH and my usage is similar to yours. I will never go to Telkom - historical shafting is still clear in my memory. Remember, they get the largest portion of your money anyway, no matter who you choose. You have to take the voice rental, so they get that too. Choose someone else for the ISP portion, there are enough of them around.

What did not make me happy:

* Incorrect billing, took 3 months to resolve

* Shocking speeds. If I open a torrent then my line got throttled, not shaped as the claim. I torrent legal content like Humbel Bundle and linux distros.

* Upgraded to 1Mbps business account to see if it was better and great at first but still not the package they claimed it be. Found the 2Mbps normal account to give better speeds in the end.

* No longer best value for money.

So you might not be happy with "TI" but I'm happier on Telkom than I was on Afrihost for my uncapped account.

The R150 monthly premium I would pay to be on Afrihost again is not worth it for me. I'm not anti-Afrihost, I still recommend them as an alternative to Telkom, but they were not worth paying more (perhaps I would consider them if they could better my R350pm at Telkom for my 2Mbps circuit & ISP account)

TI really isn't bad :) Sure, their call centre customer service and self-help website conoles are non-existant, but it's a rock solid connection.

Aren't people experiencing ON/OFF type service? Maybe not all the time but every now and then?

I still can't bring myself to going down that road, partly because of 10210 but also the ON/OFF complaints I see on the thread.

I see alot more on/off complaints on other ISP's threads, tbh :p
But each to his own. Personally I'm happy so far with TI - but I've only been there 10 days, so who knows how I'll feel about it in a month's time.

No issues on my side at all.
For months now I've been getting 250gb - 310gb on a 2mb line.
I could get more but don't need to.

I looked into this thinking I'd drop down to 2mb and wait until the Telkom upgrades the line speed but I then I saw Telkom charge R300 for a 2mb line R50 more than Webafrica. So even with a 25% discount that's only saving 25pm and getting yourself locked into a 12 month contract. Or am I missing something

The Closer bundles include voice line rental.
No other isp includes voice line rental in their prices.
With all other ISPs you will pay an additional charge to Telkom for Voice line rental regardless of your monthly ISP charge.

The closer bundles no longer include ADSL though. And no ISP can include voice line rental in their prices as only Telkom can provide it as a service.
I was on Closer, with ADSL, and it's been split, as of earlier this year.

All I'm interested in from Telkom is the 2mb line. For which they charge R300.

I have one question for you, why did you never change your line or product. I was on this product last year and changed as soon as telkom changed linespeeds. you have a terribly mismatched product there. you could have saved a bit by now if you did.

I'm in the same situation as the OP except I am on 10mb Uncapped. I'm considering TI, Afrihost and Axxess. TI is R100 more per month than both Axxess and Afrihost, is it worth it to pay the extra R100 go to TI instead?
