i dont understand how it works in SA, because you keep saying that you get connected at for example : 56k or something .... why not 512k (that is what the service is ,right?)... see I have a 1mb connection and I always connect at that speed :

ADSL STATUS

Showtime Firmware Version: 3.21
Line State: SHOWTIME
Modulation: G.dmt
Annex Mode: ANNEX_A
Startup Attempts: 7
Max Tx Power: -38 dBm/Hz
CO Vendor: ALCATEL_NETWORK
Elaspsed Time: 8 days 22 hours 49 minutes 39 seconds

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 14.8 29.0 dB
Line Attenuation 15.3 10.0 dB
Errored Seconds 78 95
Loss of Signal 6 6
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 7 32
Data Rate 1152 288 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

It always connects at 1152k ,but it doesn't always mean that I have all the bandwidth available ...but at least it never shows that it connects at lower speeds.

Why do you pay for a 512k service, to get connected at 50k ??

Also, after you have reached your 3gb cap, does this affect your local SA traffic or only international ?

If ADSL connects as this low speeds, why not just get a analogue leased line that is always connected at 33.6k , at least you don't have any cap on that ?

but you connect at 50k and get 6kbytes/sec download speed

I connect at 1152k and get 112kbytes/sec download speed

surely if it was a true 512k service, you should connect at 512k and get download speeds of about 55kbytes/second until you get capped ....

but it doesn't seem to happen ....

Here the guys mainly talk kilobytes where you are refering to kilobits.
Our downloads are 54 kilobytes/second and if it goes below that all hell breaks loose.
Same thing just different gravy [:)]

well if it is 54kbytes/sec then its acceptable ... 54 * 8 = 432kbits which is okay I guess ...

but I get the impression ADSL in SA connects at around 50Kbits and you get download speeds of about 6kbytes/sec

if the 54kbytes/sec is achieved then its not that bad and I would consider signing up (shouldn't hit the 3Gb cap as I just use it for research email and web)

...but then again ,I might wait for the sentech thing to launch and see how that goes !
