Nothing serious, just annoying the **** out of me.

1. My scanner came with two programs. Arcsoft Photostudio and some other crappy program. I have all the drivers installed but whenever I try using the scanner through Arcsoft I get the message 'unable to connect with device'. This can't be the case since it scans just fine with the other program. Any ideas?

2. My other PC, which I've just set up again after a while of not using it refuses to start - it just makes a loud, continuous beeping. Once yesterday I put it on and it booted no problem but now it's back to beeping and not booting. I opened it up thinking maybe some or other card was not connected properly but that doesn't seem to be it.

3. My version of NOD32 expired a while back and constantly gives me a 'incorrect username and password' message. Does this mean it's not functioning at all, or just something to do with the fact that it can't update? Either way, it's intruvive as hell and pissing me off.

4. Everytime I run an Office application a Windows installer box comes up as if installing something and tells me 'Could not find file <file name> Please insert Office 2003 CD'. After cancelling the message the program loads without a problem so I can't really see what's wrong. I searched and the file in question and it seems to be there so why am I getting this message?

Very noobish questions I know, but I'm sick of them so someone set me straight please :o

Thanks

2. Had that once and in my case it was caused by a faulty memory module.

4. Take it you have tried an MS Office repair?

- How many beeps do you hear? The number will normally help in determining the problem.
- Don't you have the Office CD - its probably trying to install some software that it required.
- If your nod expired it means its not updating and your not protected - you need to renew your subscription.
- Dump arcsoft :)

What's that?

My version is MS Office 2000. When I insert the CD, a menu comes up with first option being Repair (Restore Office to its original state). This might reinstall the missing file to its correct directory. Good luck :)

- 1 long beep, then silence, then another etc.

- Someone else has the CD, and I'm not talking to them at the moment so that one will be tricky :p

- Dump Arcsoft, and use what?

- Is the scanner USB or parallel connection?

- You can use Photoshop instead of Arcsoft...

- For the beep codes, check here - depends on your BIOS type, so check that first when you boot the PC. A long beep is usually memory related - remove and reseat.

I thought you might want to know that I, in fact, did not "expire" as you put it.

You do not lose functionality when your license expires, you simply have an outdated virus signature database. PM'd ;)

- Agreed Sounds like ram

- Well it looks like your office is looking for files that have either been corrupted or not installed properly. One way or another you are going to need to get an office cd to fix that problem.

Thanks for the advice everyone. As for the office thing, I guess I'll have to find those discs sometime, but how do I at least make the bombardment of messages stop? Everytime I load Outlook/Windows itself or any other Office application it comes up and I cancel it and it comes up again etc. It's annoying the k@k out of me!

No one? :(

And as for the scanner thing, it won't work through Phostoshop either because of something called 'TWAIN', which is missing. This wasn't a problem before and I'm certain I installed everything from the driver CD...

Uninstall with www.revouninstaller.com and install application again.

Could be PSU or Graphics adapter, even memory, remove all cards except that which is necessary and start inserting one at a time until you find the culprit. Alternatively, try to get a spare, working PSU to test.

If it expired, you have to renew your subscription/uninstall it and use a free AV like AVG etc.

Open Word or Excel, when it pops up the Windows Installer, copy the exact file name and use Windows search to look for it. If the file name's extention is .sy_ remove the extension and only search for the name itself. Copy the file once you found it to your desktop, rename the file and give it the exact extension that Windows Installer says it should have, browse for it with the setup/installer of Office on the desktop and it should install it again. I doubt it's just going to ask for one file though, but be prepared to do it for a few. I installed a modem this weekend this way.

I love asking questions in the manner you just did ;) :D :p

Thanks

TWAIN believe it or not is called "Technology Without An Important Name".

Is this XP? When you reinstall as I said it should work, otherwise give me the scanner name and model and I'll search for the TWAIN driver for it.

Thanks for the input Teraside.

When the installer box comes up it tells me the name of the file which cannot be found and tells me to insert the disc. Alternatively, it tells me to browse for the installation files (whatever) but no option to browse for just the missing file. File extensions aren't visible and the file is SKU112.CAB, if that makes any difference.

I don't think I typed it clearly.

Basically, the file it asks for, in this case SKU112.CAB is the exact file you should search for with Windows Search. Search for it in hidden files and folders and throughout your C drive. If you find it, copy it to your desktop and browse for it with Windows Installer, it should install it.

If you can't find it, you will need to source the disc in order to locate the file, usually it is somewhere on the hard drive though ;)

I'll try that but I'm not holding thumbs. Otherwise, I'll have to make myself look like a twat by getting the Office discs from someone I'm officially never speaking to again :(

lol...
