A fun way to learn VIM!

You could have just linked straight to the site instead of to your blog entry which is just a link to the site :p

Isn't Notepad++ on Linux? Or is this somehow better? If so, why?

Command line editor, use it from terminal to do things. Whereas Notepad++ is GUI and i'm not even sure if they have a Linux version.

VIM is very powerful in its usage as is its counterpart VI.

Things like what? Make up text? Compare text? Regex replacements etc?

Ah that sucks.

No, VIM does not suck. We work on servers that does not have GUIs. VIM's power lie in features like syntax highlighting, syntax validation for a lot of file types, html, cpp, configuration, to name a few examples.

Notepad++ does that too. Guess if you're stuck using a terminal beggars can't be choosers :D

VIM has a whole bunch of features, including very useful macros, regex and great text navigation. Editing text using VIM is bloody fast compared to any other editor if you know what you're doing.

That's usually where the problem lies. It's learning curve is more of a cliff than a curve.

If you have some extra time though, just use the built-in tutorial and check it out.

VI can be pretty handy when your terminal emulation is wrong and the arrow keys don't work. It also comes installed on basically everything. SCO Unix, Solaris or Linux.

Most of our servers are terminal access only, so no GUI editors. Vim is still text based.

I had this problem at a previous job. VIM impeded my work flow so I just used WinSCP to log in via SFTP to the server, and set Notepad++ as my default file handler for the .h files etc I found there.
