\o/ YAY! \o/

After some years of suffering pretty bad internet experiences (like you all) I must now, for the first time ever, post something positive in this forum.

1) Telkom
They managed to bump up my local exchange to 10 MB (realistic 8 MB) without any problems. When I came back from vacation I just fired up my router and, voila!, it synced at once.
Well done, Telkom.

2) Afrihost
Before I went away I cancelled my uncapped account with them. As we all know those uncapped accounts are crap. Now, after my return, I went for their Gold Package (25+25) instead and I have to admit so far it is truly unshaped! My internet is flying! For the users who prefer a good stable and speedy connection over downloading ridiculous amounts of data this is the perfect account. And with R 475 also the cheapest afaik. Particularly now, that they give us 25 on top of the regular 25 it's only R 9.50/gig.
A very good product, Afrihost.

OK, just needed to tell you about it. It might sound like some kind of promotion or something but I'm really impressed and a very happy little internet user. Downloads are swooshing and are finished before I can even finish 2 rounds of Solitaire. And watching videos without any buffering at all really soothes my poor nerves. This is kinda the internet as it was intended and is enjoyed in most other countries. Did I mention already how happy I am? :D

Sounds great - just a question: What's meant by the split 25+25 for the 50GB gold package? is that 25GB local and 25GB intl., or what?

You lucky I have been trying to get Telkom to upgrade my line for ages - Their website says it supports 10MB my neighbor has it I live 200m from the exchange but nooo they have no idea how to upgrade.
I have called 7 times and every-time they say please hold and they never come back I waited 35min this morning and gave up thats pathetic service but I have no choice but to try and try.

Glad to hear your happy :)

Have a good weekend! Peace Out!

no it's a 25gb package, but on promotion they give you an extra 25gb (think up to December..) all international

Hi Herman, glad for you. I'm also striving towards that. Can you tell me what is the final amount you pay per month, ea. Telkom line, ADSL line, ISP cost please. I don't have a Telkom phone line, but if i do gonna apply why can't i just have a ADSL line, i don't wanna make calls.

This is one of the sore points of Telkom's monopoly on the last mile network... they will not sell you "naked ADSL".

It sucks! tell me i'm struggling to decide on ADSL, why are all the other people complaining about either Telkom or their ISP or both. i'm using 3G HSUPA 3.6MB/S very stable, very fast, very reliable, only problem the GIG packages are small and expensive.

ADSL or 3g ?

Depends on your personal requirements...

3g prices are dropping, especially after CellC's intervention. Telkom Mobile launch their products next Friday (if reports are to be believed) and they will have to rock the market if they are hoping to capture some market share.

Hopefully this will force MTN and Vodacom to adjust their pricing!!

Sorry are busy on the 1's & 2's, Cell C does look good, but their USB MODEM won't work in my Billion router, i think i'm gonna contain myself and wait for the dust to settle with all the issues of Telkom, Vodacom and all other ISP'S. I have till end December to decide to keep going with 3G or switch to ADSL. Cheers!!

OMGOMGOMG :(
Remember what a happy little bunny I was when I started this thread?
Now look what results I get since Friday:

Shocking, isn't it? And that wasn't even a test to the USA but to a server right here in Cape Town. What do you guys think who's to blame for that? AH/IS or Telkom?

Murphy's Law innit? I tend to hold back on praising my ADSL for doing what it is actually supposed to do.

Shaped by ISP during the day? Re-test after 7pm!

Mickey, I'm on a suposedly unshaped account. Capped but unshaped.

And it is like that since Friday, bad for 24 hours each day.

Then it is most likely a line problem.

Step #1: contact ISP and confirm what package profile you are linked to - Afrihost Gold at highest speed possible on your line.
If correct, then:
Step #2: contact Telkom and request a port reset. Explain that you have confirmed your package with your ISP and that you were receiving excellent speeds up to <insert date> and since then it has deteriorated to less than a quarter of that. Make sure they give you a ref number and then ask them to repeat what they input on your job card.

YAY! I just called 0800-375375 and requested a port reset ... minute later I'm again flying. Thanks for the hint, Mickey

Still in love with AH and kinda proud of Telkom as well, they managed me promptly, and for a change it really helped.
