So a friend of mine asked me to fix/diagnose the display on his laptop (its blank).

First thing i did was plug a second monitor into the VGA port to rule out onboard video, and it worked 100%, second thing i did was put the laptop in a dark room and i shon a bright tourch on the display and i could see the BIOS (I intentionally went in the BIOS), so that confirmed the LCD was working.

Now I opened the display bezel to remove the inverter (my first suspicion) but to my surprise it doesnt have one, so now I must find out whether the cable (P/N 350406U00-600-G) for the LCD is damaged or the CCFL is damaged.

Any advice is welcome.

What kinda laptop? It'd have to be an LED screen to not have an inverter.
I've been repairing and replacing laptop screens for a while. Yet to come across a broken LED screen ;)

Its a HP 630.

Display
LCD Backlight Technology -> LED backlight

So yeah, LED backlight at the very least, no need for the aformentioned inverter.
You may either have to replace the entire backlight led, or the whole screen.
I don't think I have an HP screen with the dimensions "39,6 cm (15.6 inch) diagonal LED-backlit HD anti-glare (1366 x 768)".
If you're anywhere near Cape Town, I may be able to help ;)

Will this cost a fortune to replace, as the user doesnt have much money at the moment.

From HP, it'll cost as much as a new laptop if not more!
You can try get a second hand one, but most people will charge at least a grand.
If I have one you can have it, free up space 'cause I don't do PC repairs anymore, so getting rid of stuff anyway :)

Hell, I could remove the whole lid and he could buy a monitor. He uses it at home for movies anyway.

R 1072,Not bad, thanks.

I used to get all my laptop parts from Laptop Accessories, they're a great bunch and they had some very interesting screens. I once sourced a replacement LCD for a Dell Latitude. It shipped with a 1366x768 display and the one we replaced it with was a 15.6" 1600x900 for less money than Dell SA quoted me.
