When I download the 2.4.3 - 3.0.2 patch and attempt to install it, I get a message stating that I need 6.5Gb to install Wrath of the Lich King. Since when are expansion clients released as mandatory patches?

Posted this in the wrong section ><

Oh well, guess it's an install then. Rather silly one needs to store all that data if one doesn't have Wrath yet.

It's different in MMORPG's. All of the clients need to have the same version as the server when connecting. That means you need all of the WotLK data even if you don't have the expansion installed. The only difference is that you have extra restrictions, like not having access to death knights or Northrend.

I will admit that it is weird that it requires you to install WotLK though. All of the necessary data is already included in the patches. Is the message you put in the opening post correct? As I read it, it means you need 6.5Gb free space to update your client, but I might be wrong.

3.02 is the LK content patch, whether you have LK or not...need same version of the game to be able to play

Except Guild Wars, which is why I was a little confused. You can run Guild Wars with all different client versions which is very handy.

The message I put in my post was indeed correct. I download the patch, then a window pops up stating I need 6.5Gb of free space to install Wrath of the Lich King (yes...I need to do a hard drive cleanup :D)

So you need just more free space on your HD.

As for Guild Wars, if I can understand it correctly (not an expert), your client will update some core files and then only the map you are on. When moving to a new map, the client will update the files for that map. That is how I explain having to update when I change maps. I might be wrong though. You still need to be on the same version for the map though, but not the whole client.

It makes the updates smaller, since you only download what you need as you need it. But what happens is when you move to a new map with a group and one member needs to update. That can cause some irritation.

It indeed does work that way, but for example if they release an update while you're playing you aren't booted off of the game. A message just pops up asking you to restart the client when you please as a new build is available.

The updating is only a problem if you're on 56K, which is very very rarely seen overseas. Considering the updates are a few hundred kilobyes, it takes a few seconds on an ADSL line and it's almost instant for those overseas.
