Hi! I'm just having abit of problems with ADSL, and wondering if there isn't a way to cure it.

Firstly, after the wait for ADSL, I finally get it, it lasts for a nice month, and then it goes downward. Recently, I had to get the old modem exchanged, as it was giving trouble, the new one however, isn't much better.

Its a Telkom modem, ADSL USB Pots, No router.

The annoying problem is, that it keeps going into a state where it doesn't do anything. It'll go into "showtime", I can connect to the net, browse abit, and then now and then, pages just cease to load, MSN Messenger gets disconnected, ect.

The only way I have found to fix this state, is to open up the ADSL controls, press stop, and then start it up again. This is becoming really annoying. Is there any way to cure it?

It also has trouble loading some webpages. But I think this might be part of the above problem. Anyhow, Can anyone help?

Try boring a friends routers to see if this fixes the problem

Errr... I don't even know what a VPN is, Ehehe.. :p

Well, Basicly, A router will fix the problem? I'm not exactly one filled with money at the moment... Soo..

1) How much does a decent router cost?

2) Will I have to get a new modem or anything with the router? (Quite new to ADSL, So, bare with me) Or will it work fine with my current one?

3) Is there no other possible way to fix this?

Thanks for the help!

All u need is a router, the modem is built into it.
You can pick up a Mecer 4 port DSL Router for like R450 or so.
A decent router will set u back like R1000.
Try another usb port for that modem, ie : uninstall the modem, plug into diff usb port and try that out. If that doesnt work try it on another pc. Otherwise : Format reload. :)

Wouldnt do that, summer is on the way and so are those massive lightning storms. External is better and easier to unplug.

Here is a tip:
-If you got the modem on a Telkom account, tell IT it is buggered and tell IT you want to exchange it for a router instead...

Best solution! Go to a Telkom store (they won't be able to test the modem). Tell Telkom it is buggered, it is under guarantee, and you don't want the same problem with the replacement so they should rather give you the router. (I'm assuming you got it "free" on contract).

Nice ideas. Definately something to think about, The way the modem acts, It could very well be messed up. But, Telkom is aready supposed to send a techie over sometime, When he'll actually come over, I don't know. So I'll hang in abit with this modem.

Hi Jeronkey

If I were you, I would go immediately to the Telkom shop and get the modem exchanged - don't wait for the techie to come out. Firstly, from what you describe, it sounds like the modem is indeed faulty. Secondly, if you got that from Telkom, you would have signed the same 24 month contract as everyone else, so you are ENTITLED to a decent 4-port router, NOT just a cheap crappy ADSL USB Modem! If they quibble about swapping the USB modem for a 4-port router, be sure to emphasise the latter point. They are bound to give you a bit of a hard time, but don't give in - insist that they give you a 4-port router. The fact that you may only have ONE PC connected to the ADSL is irrelevant, you are ENTITLED to a 4-port router the same as everyone else (NOT just a cheap USB Modem, or even a single port router). Tell them you will be adding another computer within the next month, and were mis-advised when you signed the contract. Also, the only decent router that they supply these days is the Telkom 5102G 4-port WiFi Router (this because it is actually a Billion router), so insist on this specific router. Other 24 month contract customers can get this modem, so you should too! Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

[Edit: They also have another 4-port WiFi router from Marconi (See http://www.marconisa.co.za/adslwifirouter.htm). However, the WiFi in this router is only 802.11b (11mbps) so don't accept this one - you'll be sorry if you want to use the WiFi some time in the future. Insist on the Telkom 5102G 4-port WiFi Router, which has 802.11g (54mbps) WiFi, and this can be disabled if not required now.]

Yeah I've taken mine back twice already. Have upgraded since to the wireless one (the crappy one) hope it breaks soon again....

YaaaY! So far so good, Aka, Working internet. Went today to a Telkom shop, and got the thing exchanged. 5102G 4-port WiFi Router!

Its been working fine, Webpages load now.. and hasn't cut off or anything.
Downloads now move at a nice 30kbps or so, rather than 18 or so kbps. So its a nice speed increase to.

Plus, I think the WiFi is going to come in handy for my DS, and Future Wii. Thank You guys for your help.

Good to hear that you're up and running. Feel good that you cost Telkom a coupla hundred bucks today? :)

PS: Please remember to change the default login/password to your router, else you may be donating some bandwidth.

I feel good that I have working ADSL, They must start to sell working products. :P

And, the changing of password/login was one of the first things we did^-^

Amazing.... well I still have a year to go on my contract, I'm sure that stupid Marconi won't last that long, maybe I'll even be able to get the upgrade on the 5102 before my time is up...
