Was considering this - a 384 line for daytime use (afrihost type?) and a 4096 (imagine?) after-hours type line for serious downloading and net activity. Both together would cost less than my current 512 unlimited (IS sat - vox).

The questions:
How would one manage this double connection practically? 2 routers that plug and unplug or is there a simpler method with one router. My current router is isp supplied so I am not too familiar with the connection methods of these other options that both require a router. Switching 1 at a time physically is doable but some type of automation would be preferred obviously.

Am I being stupid/too complicated about this? I need a reasonable daytime connection but not much and I'm figuring a 4096 line would get a lot more downloaded than an all day unshaped uncapped 512? (p2p and http download, movies etc)

Would appreciate some advice from ye meisters of the modem....

thnx

I guess you just should have a 4mb line from telkom, then 2 ISP accounts (your daytime one and after hours one). Then you would manually change the ISP account on the router when you need to.

You probably get a router that will change accounts automatically though I don't know of one. Your curent router may be locked to the ISP that gave it to you.

Rather set up PPPoE on each computer and have your router in bridge mode (if its not locked).

Thx for the replies. I am using just one computer hambone.

Also I would have to get a new router as this one belongs to the ISP. Recommendation?

There are lots to chose from and the guys are right about bridge-mode so that you can then chose the provider dependant on your wishes.

I just bought my gf a D-Link wireless for R550 (sorry will ahve to PM you the model number when I am work tomorrow).
My first thought of it was it is way, way, way over complex for th eaverage user. However, after getting over the lack of 'wizards' it is also actually pretty comprehensive.

Having only ever used Netgear, Linksys and Belkin before I'd say that as this and the Billion routers seem to be the best priced in SA then go for one of them. Bridgemode is present on nearly all and so therefore the only questions are wireless or not and then 'what's the best price'.

If you want more info on these things from a technical level, give me a PM with your contact details and I'll get on our our Support Team to call you tomorrow with their knowledge and experience.

it's quite simple. get 1 adsl router. set up 2 accounts. activate 384 acct during day. activate 4mb account after hours.

Even with one PC, set your router (a new one, even a cheapo one) to bridge mode and create two PPPoE connections on the PC. You can then manually disconnect, and connect as your usage changes. Far easier than fiddling with a router.

That said though, I am sure it is also possible to get a router that can manage more than one ATM PVC with the same VPI/VCI settings and create a schedule rule to tunnel the traffic over a different ATM at different time periods. My router can't cope with having ATM1 and ATM2 with the same VPI/VCI settings; but there may be one out there that can.

The latter suggestion is simply me thinking aloud, but perhaps someone wiser than myself can elaborate / put my ideas to their fateful end.
