I was always under the impression that the audi A3 and the VW golf shared a lot of the same traits. Would this extend to engines?

Would a 1.8T audi engine fit in a golf from the same era and vice versa?

yes they share alot of components ... the newer ones ... the older ones not too sure ... new ones definitely ...

Check Wiki's list of VW group 1.8T engines. Your best indicator is going to be whether the engine codes (1st 3 characters of the engine number) match. Failing that, next question would be whether they're rated at the same power output.

All the 20v 1.8T engines are intrinsically the same. Boost pressure, engine management & minor components might differ, but they are pretty much identical...

Nice link!
I wonder whats in the TT Sport...

176 kW (239 PS; 236 bhp) @ 5,700 rpm; 320 N·m (236 ft·lbf) @ 2,300-5,000 rpm: 2005 Audi TT quattro Sport, (9:1 compression ratio)

I wouldnt mind that!:)
Bwana you gonna chip it?:)

Oil pump immediately followed by bearings.

That ain't a pretty thought. There are a number of places that sell remanufactured engines - the back of the CAR magazine normally has a bunch of ads...

EDIT

Be very weary with engine swaps between the brands. Even though the engine MIGHT be exactly the same, the entire engine management system isn't necessarily.

VERY GOOD POINT!!

Valid point.

If the engine is exactly the same how does the ECU make a difference? When you replace a engine with a identical one they dont change ECU's, at most you disconnect it from power to reset it so it can learn from scratch.

Am I missing something?

Pity - I can get the A3 engine for r13k but apparently the VW one would be cheaper.

We are possibly the wrong people to be giving you advice on this one...perhaps best to chat to someone who works on VAG stuff all the time.

Check with the guys on the VW club forum, they very helpful and know everything!:p
Go for the 132kw MK4 Gti engine or the PGTis or even better the TT/S3 engine!

Thanks again - I know it's a long shot that the VW engine will work but who knows. :)
