So, I'm in the market for a new camera and after reading endless reviews and listening to arguments about which is better, Nikon or Canon, I learned a new word today. A 'measurebator'.

According to the urban dictionary it is someone, almost always a guy, who gets so caught up in the technical specs of a camera to the point of endlessly repeating stats in numerous online forum postings and arguing which camera is better solely on specs; who conversely almost never takes any pictures. Go figure...:D

You can take either a Canon or a Nikon, take good photos, and ask an expert.... won't be able to tell you which camera you used.
On my last trip to my local camera store, the salesperson told me about a client where his friends told him "buy Nikon, it's better".... and he spent R400k replacing his Canon kit. Well, he's not taking better photos today :D

Should rather have spent it towards a good lense. That would have been 'better'.

I like my canon but really like people will tell u, stuff the thing in your hand if its feels like a puppy u like buy it.Bought Nikon and Canon has great cameras but some has more bang for your buck. I took canon for only one reason I never had any problems with one of there products

Yep. Unfortunately there is no catchy name for the exact opposite, i.e., someone who approaches photography entirely based on faith. Take for example the recent debacle around the Leica digital cameras (M9, etc.), and their poor performance on DxOMark. The DxO results show that the Leica CCD sensor performs poorly, especially at higher ISO. This is not surprising at all if you understand the technology, or if you understand the DxO testing methodology.

Yet there are some Leica owners who refuse to believe that their sacred cameras only take average quality pictures (in terms of technical performance) compared to more modern bodies.

Anyhow, I suspect that the word "measurebator" is intended to be used in a derogatory fashion, implying that understanding the technical details of digital photography is mutually exclusive to being a good (or at least decent) photographer, which is a biased conclusion not supported by reality.

By the same measure it is clearly not necessary to understand the technology (in great detail) to be a great photographer. To each his own.

My eyes glaze when someone shows me a DxO score instead of a photo.

Sure, but you should not look at the overall "DxO score", which I agree is useless. The individual measurements, though, such as the SNR, dynamic range and MTF curves are sound, and agree very well with other measurements of the same nature. All three these measurements correlate very well with observable characteristics of actual photos taken with the camera under test.

Not entirely true. Lower-end Canons tend to have more red noise in the shadows while Nikons tend to have more green noise in the shadows.
In both cases you can relatively easily correct for either, but if it's not corrected and one wants to pixel peep specifically to figure out what camera it was taken with...

Just sayin' ;p

Saw the title and thought it was like a fapmometer...

I are disappoint.

Just go out and get a pump-zoom, that way you can join the measurebator crowd without having to swat up on your tech specs :D

First heard that word from Ken's site. He says some crazy stuff but sometimes makes sense.
