Hello,

I've recently relocated to South Africa from the US, and I'm in the process of setting up ADSL service.

I've been succesful in getting Telkom to install a 1024 kbs line into my home office, but I don't have a clue about ISP's.

I have four basic requirements:

1) I'd like to take full advantage of the speed I've leased through Telkom

2) I'd like to identify the most cost effective 3-5gb/month service with a "top up" cap where I can buy more bandwidth if I need it.

3) I'd like a service were any unused bandwidth rolls over to the next month

4) I need a service that I can charge to a credit card; I'm still not set up with a SA bank account.

Any thoughts from the group would be appreciated; I have to confess that the choices surrounding ADSL and ISP's are confusing to me -- in the states we have bundled services without usage caps and there aren't nearly as many choices.

Thanks in advance for your responses - this seems like a really knowledgeable and helpful group.

Thanks,

~j

hey

welcome to South Africa.

DSL here is still in the dark ages!!!

I suggest openweb. they have the best service, most value for money.

http://www.openweb.co.za

im on the 512k uncapped account for R1369 and it rocks.

now my dad has stopped fighting with me because his cap is finished. we no longer have a cap!!

Thanks . . .

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated.

If I were to get a 512k account, would that mean that it would only run half as quick as the 1024 line from Telkom?

What about other ISP's with capped service that don't show speeds?

I'd like an uncapped account but R1369 /mo seems like a whole lot of money.

I'm so confused . . .:o

thats just one of their packages.

they have a whole lot of other packages that will work with your 1 meg.

they rock!

You might want to look at WebAfrica. You are able to buy pre-paid and it carries over untill it is used up.

If you get a TelkomInternet account you pay R249, they usually allow around 10GB of usage in a month, however when you go above 3GB they can cap you at any point.

What I would recommend is doing what I do. I use a TelkomInternet account that got me alot more than 3GB, (was capped yesterday), now I use a WebAfrica prepaid account which I loaded 1GB onto for R75.

Hey,

That's great advice, thanks very much.

Well thought out, much appreciated.

Best,

~J
