A question about number portability

I have a cell c contract through autopage that is about a month from ending. I wanted to change to a different package but they are being annoying about it. So basically I want to port from autopage to a different service provider.

My question is do i need to wait for the current contract to end, then switch it to prepaid and then get a new contract and use the existing number. OR

Do I get a new contract now and still be able to port the existing number to it when the current contract ends?

wait for contract to end then and either port to prepaid and then move to new SP or end contract and tell new SP to asist you with moving the number
 
I have a question: how often can you port you number? If I buy my next phone cash.. and I feel Telkom 8ta has a better offering... can I port from Virgin Mobile to 8ta prepaid for 2 months lets say and port back to Virgin or to MTN if they have another offering down the line?
 
i was under the impression that you could only port numbers within the same service provider - i.e. from mtn to vc to cellc within autopage.
didn't know you could move from one sp to another and retain your number...
