So for the past few months I have noticed that many, many VW's have either the emblem on the grille or the boot missing and today on my way to work I decided to count how many I could spot that have been marred by this terrible affliction.

I counted six Polo's, 2 Vivo's, one Touran and two Golf's with missing VW emblems in the 4.5km I drive to work. Do people actually remove them to serve a purpose? More airflow through the radiator perhaps, since they are also a pretty common car when it comes to overheating?

Or do people steal them off? I have also noticed that many of the VW's of the lowered variety have these same badges hanging from their rear view mirrors or sometimes, even their rear tow hitches. Maybe as initiation into the "Be Patient, I'm Lowered" club involves reappropriating said badge to their car as a sadistic, malicious way of proving their worth?

Think it may be a pride thing? Just like shagging a fat chick... Driving a VW is fun until somebody sees you. Perhaps they think it will disguise them? Who knows.

They get stolen because it's a popular brand and you can get a few rands for them from scrapyards. I've been told it's quite easy, just stick in a screwdriver, twist and pop it off.

It happened to my Peugeot literally the first night I parked it outside.
