do you lose quite a bit of weight during ramadan ?
&
do you take any vitamins / supplements to maintain your health ?

I normally observe a 24 hrs fast about once a month. However that is food only, so I drink water during and that is it.

Of course I'm not a Muslim...

No, not really.... but I have taken a multivitamin now which stopped my finger nail skin from peeling. So yes, some people do. every person is different though, but fast this year is not long as one is really only skipping lunch.

grantza is going on a Fasting Muslims

Lost 4 kgs. .. no vitamins or supplements.... like zizo911 says, it's just missing lunch..... still have a normal coffee and toast in the morning (just earlier) and supper at night

We eat the most unhealthy foods in Ramadhan, so although the qty might be less, most of us probably gain a little. E.g. For breaking fast its dates and fried stuff.

This is exacerbated by the fact our bodies tend to store fat more as our sugar levels are fluctuating so much

Don't take supplements. Get enough from food.

aaaah

ta for that.

my stupidity came shining through - not remembering it is really only lunch as a "meal" that is missed.

i think i only considered my own bad eating habits of snacking all day long :D

While true on a basic nutritional level, I think in this case supplements is really good advice. I know various Muslims (and Christians) that go wild with fasting. Supplements is a good way to limit the damage [*] without stepping on anyone toes regarding the basic religious observance.

[*] Calorie restrictions seems to improve cognitive performance and lifespan (google it) - its pretty murky ground.

Because the fast is in our winter and the sun governs the fast (iirc), the time of fasting is a little shorter than normal.

i must say, i have always enjoyed eid in cape town.

the folk here get together on the beachfront opposite sabc for the moon sighting - traffic is chaotic, but there is a really nice atmosphere, and great to see families together - something that is somewhat lacking these days.

So what would people do in places like Finland where at this time of year the sun doesn't really go down? I was there at the end of May and it was already crazy light with very little darkness. In fact, next year if I'm not mistaken, Ramadan will be right slap bang in the middle of the summer solstice and hence no darkness at all?

What would happen in this situation?

Maybe lose, no gain. Nutrition is possibly far better than usual, as I make sure we're getting a good mix, consuming adequate veg/fruit, drinking enough water, etc.

But just logged in for:

There's actually a lot of misconception around this one. There's a few options available, and I guess which one a person would choose to follow depends on the person and/or their local scholars' advice/decisions:
- follow Makkah fasting times instead of local fasting times
- follow the fasting times of the closest city with a normal sunrise/sunset
- follow the fasting times of the closest Muslim country with a normal sunrise/sunset
- observe the times of the area they're in as long as there is visible sunrise and sunset (probably the more hardcore lot in a place like Finland)
Source: I wondered about this too a few years ago, and looked into it.

Thanks :)

My friend gyms regularly, so she loses a lot of weight in ramadaan, however lots of it is probably muscle mass because your body will choose to metabolize muscle before fat. But usually about a 6 or 7kg loss, especially this year because she was maintaining a healthy diet, supplementing vitamins and minerals through those green smoothies.
