42 and I can hear it loud 'n clear. It is at 17kHZ I think. The original mp3 from the BBC website sounds a little more annoying, this one from the NYT sounds chopped.

Jeepers, yes, heard that loud and clear. Actually think I'm still kinda hearing it. Probably shouldn't have played it three times in a row. Talk about a torture device!

Also downloaded one from the BBC which appears to just contain street and other background noise.

The only problem with putting these into mp3 is that guarantees that all or almost all of the actual high frequency content will have been filtered out before encoding.

Why don't you just make you're phone sound like a watch and set it to fairly soft. No-one will suspect a thing as no-one even looks around if a watch beeps. Makes much more sense than trying to make it a loud constant frequency and still having the risk of someone being able to hear it. If you think about it, there are also quite a few younger teachers(26) in schools who will also hear it will catch on sooner or later.

Besides I can also still hear it buzzing in my ears

Haha yea we used to leave it on during lessons (had it on our cellies), and piss off all our fellow school mates while our teachers had no idea what everyone was getting so pissed off abt. Good times..

well, I downloaded it onto my fone and pretty much all of us can hear it, two 24 year olds and two by 21 year olds. I'm gonna test it on my mom and grandma tomorrow.

My girlfriend can't hear anything, it's quite funny. She's asleep and I held the fone to her ear and she woke up, she tunes me 'wtf are you doing". I says "an experiment, can you hear that noise??" She says no, what noise?? Repeat 4 times and now she's p1ssed off with me.
