do a search on it...when you go check out the car, ask for the VIN number from the dealer, or just slyly write it down while checking under the hood or the license disk. Take that number to your local police station and ask them to do a search...lol my brother in law is a cop and he says taxi owners come in there regularly when buying new taxi's that was has a VIN for a toyota but its a GWM!!! LMAO...
There is also a website where you can check if the car is/was/is going to be stolen...but for that you still need the VIN!
Any decent dealer should check all cars received into stock against TransUnion's database & have a printout of the details handy. That will show you whether the finance on the car has been settled, as well as whether it's ever been reported stolen.
Nope - VIN number = chassis number. 17-character sequence, normally visible just on the inside of the windscreen on the passenger's side. If not, it will also be on the license disc.
I'm trying to buy the car from a private owner.
How can i verify about the financial settlement?
I someone changes ownership of a car is the TransUnion's database updated?
Well if you doing it private you should call ITC and check iwth them if the car is not a code 2 or 3 and also check the market value etc......(Make, Model, Year)........or if you finance they will do HPI at the bank and they will know what to do
ITC = TransUnion, but refers erroneously to the credit bureaux-side of things. HPI is what the checkup I initially referred to is called within the industry...
Just thought I'd post because some of these guys are really tricky when trying to hide the fact that the car is stolen.
You have to check the VIN on the registration disc (that piece of paper in the windscreen) and the one on the chassis. The chassis VIN plate is located right at the front of the engine but it's on the chassis itself, held in place with rivets, it's got the VIN and engine number on there.
Also you should find out where the engine number is located on a car because you have to check that also, if the car has a stolen engine they'll take it to the impound yard and rip out the engine. Both the VIN and Engine number must be checked.
Anyway take the registration number and VIN to your local police station and have them check it out (they have to check it out).
