Problem with plan to increase fuel taxes in South Africa

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has slammed Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's proposal to increase the general fuel levy (GFL) starting next month.

In a statement, the organisation said the increase will drive up transport costs and food prices, and place low-income households under even more strain.
 
The morons can't seem to see that the more expensive they make it the more people will try to save. Cut your damn expenditure.

Well yes, at least you can control your traveling and fuel expenditure fairly easily, VAT is a silent killer, which I am sure costs a lot more on a monthly basis once all is said and done. Now if you control your travel and decrease your luxury spend, you can give the government a rigid middle digit while also removing a large portion of whatever joy you have left in your life.

Do you know that the price of everything that is transported by fuel also go up? That is basically everything. There is no difference really between a fuel levy and VAT hike. Vavi DA! AmanDA DANC GNU-GNU!
 
they couldn't get the VAT increase so the only way that the farkers can get the money for all the cr@p that they promising while still stealing as much as they can has to come from somewhere - so its going to have to be the fuel levies otherwise they will keep going after the pension funds and also overtax the ridiculously small actually registered income tax base that they have

this government is a brain dead and totally crooked organisation that is hell bent on stealing all the money that is supposed to be used to run this country and they are probing and searching for ways to increase the amounts that they can steal

Missing the point. It's not about paying more or not. The monthly fluctuations are actually more than that but if people save it results in less in government coffers in any case.

The problem with not spending is that it kills our economy. Part of why we are in this mess.
 
Everybody along the food chain uses fuel. The farmer with his tractors and machinery, the delivery to the market, the purchasers at the markets to the store, and then the food delivery surface.

What it should do is push more people off the taxis and into the railway service.

The problem is that we have too many poor people that's become accustomed to hand-outs and you saw that recently with the middle class rates revolt in Cape Town, where the Mayor pretty much said, if you have money you should pay more for things. This after the poor started comparing Mouille Point Roads with that of informal settlement roads. The different is that the rates mainly for Mouille point properties are R8000+ per month and those for the informal settlement pays no property tax. YES MONEY DOESNT LIE AND PAYS FOR FIXING THINGS.

Farmers should be getting a full rebate of the higher diesel fuel levy. Farmers have received rebates on fuel levies and RAF payments for diesel used on farms since 2000.

It's a dream I have to be able to use functional, safe and punctual commuter rail. At this point, even the existing lines which have not been expanded in decades (?) is of not much use.

True, I will not argue that, but might I point out that our spending has little to do with it, and government policy and spending have everything to do with it. One of the largest governments in the world being paid higher salaries than most first world countries is outright theft. The choice then becomes do you blindly spend money you don't really have to support their greed or do you draw a line in the sand. I believe it is time to draw a line in the sand until sanity prevails..
