Gautrain upgrade has one big problem

The current expansion plan for the Gautrain passenger rail service will neglect those who need effective public transport the most, the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has warned.

The AA has long been critical of the Gautrain running at a loss while being subsidised with around R2.5 billion in taxpayer funding annually.

WTF, really enough with this shut it down!

Does everything the government do have to run in Billions of Rands in loss?

Public transport is almost always dependent on state funding and it's generally beneficial.

I'm not sure that it's good value for money in this case though. They'd be better off fixing metro rail first.

Gautrain was always a vanity project that from day one was going to run at a heavy loss. The fact that the tax payer is funding this nonsense to the tune of 2.5 Billion a year is a crime they should be criminally charged for, I guarantee that the directors and employees are getting increases and bonuses every year. Self entitlement seems to be a mainstay of government policy now days. The 2.5 billion will be far better spent on other forms of public transport. Force Gautrain to either become self sufficient or shut down, the continued loss of billions each year to projects that do not actually serve the masses is a crime against humanity.

Say it with me friends, public infrastructure does not have to make a profit.

Yep, the N1 upgrade was done at a massive loss too. They tried to recoup the costs with e-tolls and we know how that went
