Seeing the Crayfish thread I remember having this many many years ago and it was AMAZING.

Any place one can legally acquire some? Shelled still if possible and fresh. Not this dried out crap.

There are a couple of abalone farms in Hermanus. You can buy some there as far as I know although you might fall on your back when you see the prices.

Pricing is not really an issue.

Just don't want to step on the wrong side of the law. I would gladly buy farmed abalone. If it's available and legal. I'll try get hold of one of these farms.

Found this HIK farm and some others, but they all seem to export and only sell in bulk?

Check when the season opens again and try and make contact with spot divers that dive the stuff. One of them will always be willing to sell you on or two. Will be legal if the guy comes to your house with them and you just give him cash.

I used to dive the stuff years ago but with all the rules and the short season now it has become too much of a pain.

Tastes delicious though although a huge pain to clean and prepare.

We used to cut it into thin slices. Hammer it with a steak hammer and then fry it for a few seconds in garlic butter. Add black pepper and enjoy /drool.

One of my favourite recipes..verbatim. Jirre I miss those days. Diving crayfish and abalone on a daily basis in Hawston during summer holidays. Eventually you become sated and cannot look at the stuff anymore. Then you sell it in the caravan park for booze and cigarette money.

Apparently a few companies have now been licenced to buy and distribute Abalone but under very strict conditions. One such company is Freshline Fisheries here in Knysna. Owner is Ron tel 044 382 3131 he can give you all the details.

That's brilliant ty.

I suppose shipping will be an issue. But let me chant to him. Appreciate the feedback.

Perlemoen stew.. omg its awesome, if done right. Soft, creamy and amazingly tasty. Goto beat the things quite heavily to make them soft, then dice them.

Best had fresh, otherwise dont bother.

Dassiesfontein farmstall in Caledon sells it minced and canned. +-R180 per can. It feeds about 4 people if you make it with a cream sauce and rice and peppers.
