I love retro games, for several reasons....

1. They are cool and remind me of why I used to buy stiffies and later blank CD's

2. They don't rape my systems resources

3. The gameplay of some games was superb...

4. There were games that my PC couldn't handle then but almost all of them should be playable even on a basic system today

5. You can buy them cheaply in Game or Makro and many titles seem to have been released freely and some have even been open sourced.

Those are just a few of the reasons. Now it seems that while the copyright hasn't expired, many games that have been relegated to old memories are in fact out there and aren't being supported or published anymore.

Now for those who don't know what abandonware is here is the wiki definition:

Abandonware refers to computer software that is no longer current. While the term has been applied largely to older games, other classes of software are sometimes described as such. Definitions of "abandoned" vary; generally, it refers to software no longer available for legitimate purchase or of a certain age.

The term has no legal meaning, and much abandonware is not in the public domain, which prevents legal duplication or distribution without the permission of its owner or expiration of applicable software copyrights. Software companies may change their names, go bankrupt, enter into mergers, or cease to exist for a variety of reasons. When this happens, product rights are usually transferred to another company that may not sell or support the software acquired.

The term "abandonware" is applied to legitimize the copying of software, in cases where copyright protection still holds.[1] Some companies, such as Corel and LucasArts actively defend their copyrights, while others release past works into the public domain. Most companies have not stated a position either way.

Now with that said, piracy is of course an issue of concern. With all the mod chipping going on and copied games flying around and of course copied movies, applications etc I am sure SAFACT and the boys at the BSA are of course keeping an eye out for piracy etc. It follows that for various reasons many forums such as this one don't allow the posting of links etc because of the sensitive nature of piracy etc.

Fine but surely on the topic of abandonware shouldn't the status quo be different from conventional piracy. I mean jeez is anybody going to give a crap of people are pirating Lemmings 1 or Leisure Suite Larry or Police Quest.

So with out further ado, what do the mods say about posting links to downloadable abandonware what is wrong with it?

Does anybody have any good links to stuff that is downloadble without having to first pay a subscription fee.

I know of one site www.vetusware.com

This one has some cool stuff not just games.

I am looking for games like flight sims (combat sims like US Navy Fighters, B17 etc) and adventure games like LBA1 and LBA2( blady awesome games when they came out) just to name a few.

With that said I want to add that you must check out the SCUMMVM. Search for it on google. Theres even version for windows pocket pc ( or windows mobile for those who are up to date). So you can play some oldies on your PDA/Smartphone. I am currently playing Sam and Max hit the road on a PDA. Totally cool :D

Retro gaming for me is rather to go for for the C64's bigger brother the Amiga. Was definately a superior machine on its day with a HUGE selection of available games of all types. With todays PC's being powerfull beasts the emulation on a PC is a doddle and as easy as running a installer. Below is a link to a website which should link you to everything you will ever need Amiga wise:---

I wonder what the legal implications will be of setting up a local site for abandonware.

Will they come after you the same as they would go after game and movie pirates

I agree with LG but we are actually able to get our hands on abandonware and not all of the ones you mentioned LG, and those of us who does have them are unwilling to share :(
