Ability Office Home finds a comfortable ‘home’ between the free OpenOffice.org and the very expensive Microsoft Office. It might not be ideal for large businesses, but it’s perfectly suited for home users.
There is a surprising amount of applications that are designed to rival Microsoft’s Office suite of applications. Ability Office Home is one such application, which you may soon see bundled with a variety of netbooks in South Africa. What is of most interest is that this version of the software comes bundled on a 1GB USB flash drive, making it ideal for devices such as netbooks, which don’t have optical drives.
The software is pretty impressive and we actually preferred the user interface to that of the popular OpenOffice.org. The applications included in the suite are comparable to that of MS Office: there is a word processor, spreadsheet application, photoediting application, as well as vector-based drawing and layout software, to name a few.
We also loved the fact that Ability Office Home allows you to create PDF documents from within any of its applications. Another nice ‘feature’ is the fact that you get two licences with this software, allowing you to install this software on two computers – a great value add for office productivity software.
