So, lately my father has been complaining about getting calls from a hidden number every morning. Every morning around the same time, same routine, once he answers the phone there is simply silence and the other party hangs up after a few seconds.

More upsetting is the fact that today, after the cellphone call was hung up, a call came through on the land-line which went the same way, silence and then hangs up.

So my question is : wtf?

I've had the same thing, for a week or two

Had that happening to me for a few months, luckily it stopped a couple months ago, rather bizarre.

Call centres pinging his number to see if it can be resold.

fill in the national opt out register thing.

Next time, he should just blast the caller with a police whistle. Works well on obscene phone callers.

Ok ok I'll stop, I was just trying to get a date. :(

I also got it for a while. I think its some sort of automated process whereby all the phone numbers in a database is being checked for being valid numbers still. IE: Still being used.

I just blocked all calls with no number displayed for about 2 weeks and then it all stopped.

Hmmm I see.. Was just afraid it might be some tsotsi trying to check if the house was available for browsing.

Many thanks

I get this, but why is it so persistent? Surely one or two pings would suffice?

I'm interested because my partner has been getting the same thing for the last couple of weeks. He doesn't answer "number withheld" calls.

Had the same. Started with one of those automated Telkom messages. Then every day it would cut out the moment you answered. After about 2 weeks I connected the 2, called them and complained. Stopped the very same day.

Still get those that cut out, but you know who they are from because those fckers will normally call you the next day to tell you have won a holiday.
