Does iburst modem work only on the iburst network? I ask because i paid cash in full for my modem, but if ever there is competition for iburst in the future, i would like to have option of moving over to another service provider.

HiDamocci

The modem only on the iBurst network

If another ISP came into town charging a fifth of what iburst charges, I doubt anyone would wanna buy my modem. There's gotta be a way to reconfigure the modem to work with another ISP.

Thing is, iBurst is a proprietary technology- no-one else in South Africa uses the same frequency and data protocol as them. It's not like cellphones where every network uses GSM and you can switch between them. Instead, iBurst the company (WBS) uses a technology, also called iBurst (or HC-SDMA) which no other local ISP uses - except for MWEB and Vodacom who resell WBS contracts as far as I can tell.
