I have been trying to use MSN Messenger for P2P video calls. Every time I launch the video connection, once the opposition agrees to the connection, it fails after about 30 seconds. The same happens for voice calls.

I have a D-LINK DSL504G router and am running MSN Messenger 6.1.
OS is XP Professional.
UPnP installed already.

And from the MSN messenger "tools->Options->Connection"?, I found the following statement:

Advanced Connection Information
You are connected to the Internet through a non-UPnp symmetric NAT. (Administrator)

Thanks a lot!

I contacted DLINK SA in this regard and was told it couln't do voice/video using MSN messenger. I then ditched the 504 in favour of the NETGEAR DG834 which is suppose to be able to do it - I gave up with that router too and am now using Skype (www.skype.com) for our voice - works with both the DG834 & DSL 504G.

Me thinks MSN messenger makes it difficult for these guys, as all the other voice software I tried (skype being the best IMHO) worked to some degree at least.

If you do get it to work please tell us how you did it.

I do msn msngr video & voice or msngr video & skype ia Telkom POTS modem, no problem. i'm using Win XP (with & without SP2) via Internet connection Firewall. If you are using a firewall other than this one then I suspect that this is your problem as msngr uses dynamic ports and thus a firewall which doesn't support dynamic ports will block access. Suggest you try msngr with firewall off to see whether this is your problem or not.

MSN for video, Skype for audio, either for keyboard chat

Hi Guys,

Please also note that on the normal cheap ADSL accounts Telkom now mentions they block voice ports on them.
The new expensive ADSL account they unblock that ports and you can make use of the voice ports and everything.

i can't remember where but I heard if you using a router you have to open up certain ports to enable them to work with nat. Only way msn can do it i think

..- dot dot dash ;)

Yes you can open the ports on your router, but msn makes use of certain ports and as far as my testing and knowledge goes, these are the ports that are blocked at the ISP.

I can be wrong, but I saw this on the Telkomsa.net website under ADSL.

You may want to check this out:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-jennings-midcom-stun-results-02.txt
It explains how all routers are created unequal when it comes to dealing with video and telephone applications: i.e MSN Chat, VoIP/SIP etc.
This guy from Cisco tested a whole bunch of routers to determine if NAT (Network Address Translation - a feature that takes your internally IP-addressed data and makes it appear to be coming from your external IP Address) worked properly and would support SIP and other media-rich applications.
What does all this mean to normal folk? Well, if your router works - great. If not, don't waste days (as I did) trying to figure out why or get any sensible support from the manufacturers. It's a hit and miss affair.
Good news is that Skype works in spite of all this (as it doesn't use SIP protocol). Can't wait for SkypeIn...
