Not sure I understand the purpose of your posting. Is this your public service effort or are you expecting a Noddy badge for identifying a phishing mail?

Your thread title is very misleading. It is a phishing email that uses ABSA's name to lure uneducated internet users into handing over personal info. This is not a scam that ABSA is running, which is what your thread title makes it out to be.

Apologies.
It was meant to be public service.
I was not sure where put it. so i put it here since the CPA and Consumerism forum is about consumer issues.
Is the a way to change the topic title?

Ignore those being dicks.

my question is : is there an email address of absa that we can fw these mails to?
so that they can at least take notice of them and report to authorities

I get this crap and similar every day. Being a Nedbank customer, I forward all Nedbank related fake emails to [email protected]. They are most efficient and close down the websites quickly

I also get FNB, Nedbank and Blapsa banking notifications - yet I'm at none of those banks

I just delete those without opening them.

It's not a hoax. It's a ABSA marketing scheme. They are automatically selling you a insurance policy if you fail to produce your current schedule.
Sneaky bastards....time to move banks it seem.

Mail from them:
"In order for us to update your profile accordingly, we will need for you to provide us with your latest policy schedule or a confirmation of cover stating that your vehicle is currently comprehensively insured. We will need a copy of this document by no later than 27 December 2011. It is important to note that the document may not be older than 3 months from today.

You can either email or fax the proof to us.

Our fax number is ABSA Fax: 0860 053 422
Our email address is ABSA email: [email protected]

Please note that it is your responsibility to provide us with the proof of insurance before 27 December 2011. Failure to adhere to this will result in us having no choice but to insure the vehicle on your behalf and collect a premium together with your monthly finance instalment. This insurance will cover the outstanding capital, including you in the event of a claim.

This product is called the Assisted Insurance Product and the premium will be R xxx.x per month. Should we not be able to verify that your vehicle is comprehensively insured, this product will be enforced.
Absa Insurance and Financial Advisers offer competitive insurance products from a panel of Insurers. Should you be interested in utilizing these services, we can arrange for you to be contacted by them.
"

They spelled installment wrong :p

Wesbank aka FNB do the same. Your car has to be comprehensively insured if its financed, its part of the documents you sign. They probably have some clause in the contract to insure it one your behalf if it isn't insured.

But overall ABSA bank is expensive (on banking accounts and fees) so you should leave them anyway.

i think i've receiveed a similar mail purporting to be from all the big 4 banks. and i get them relatively frequently. like once every two weeks or so.

I received one of those and i am not an ABSA client ....some times i try to trace these most have gmail accounts..i have managed to trace one or two .. accessed their router to on one of them . not much was working there after that .
