Goy an email today from absa online security with a link to an ABSA programme called "Sentrybay". Apparently if I don't activate it my online banking will be suspended?!? Is this legit or is it a scam? Anyone know?

Goes as follows:

Attention,

A new phishing scam is going around and due to this, ABSA has developed an Online Security Program (Sentrybay) to protect our customers from fraudulent activities and online phishing.

You are hereby required to download the attached file and follow the intructions for us to be able to activate the program in your account for safer Internet Banking.

As a result of this Security Program, we require you to bear with us online for some minutes and follow the instructions as we will be sending you some sms for this verification purpose and it will be required in other to finish the Security Program Activation.

Note: If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporarily suspend your account.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this action may have caused.

?So its a fraud scam?

No it is completely real! Just as real as the Nigerian Finance minister that picked you to help him move the US$50mil out of the country.

</sarcasm>

Come on. Can you not spot it? How do people fall for these things?

Here are some clues:
1. They do not address you by name in the mail. They simply say "Attention"
2. They attach a file for you to download and install.
3. They threaten to suspend your account if you do not do what they say.

The threat always gives the scam away...

the bank ALWAYS say they won't send you an email asking you to login into your account.

exactly, if they require you to install software, it will indicate this once you have logged onto your internet banking account (like standard bank did with that trusteer rubbish)

The fact that you even ASK the question is very worrysome!

+1 what uFIS said...

They have been saying this for years but people don't listen or research much.
Anybody that falls for any internet banking scam is either negligent, ignorant, or plain doff.

Take your mouse over any links in the mail. When you go over a link, check the url in the status bar (bottom of mail client). Does the url look like legit?
If not, delete with a clean conscious.

Uhmm because I suspected it was a scam I posted it. Check the header. I just wondered if anyone else had better insight. So to all the little trolls stuff off! And thanks to those that at least helped with usefull links etc.
