Johannesburg - Absa Group [JSE:ASA] has suspended all credit card transactions through the EasyPay website after receiving a number of fraud complaints, according to a newspaper report on Monday.

The bank stopped all transactions on the EasyPay website last week and laid a complaint with the police, according to the Afrikaans daily Beeld.

Head of Absa's fraud detection unit Paul Mathias told the paper the bank stopped the transactions last Wednesday as a pro-active step to protect the bank's customers.

This would apply until the problem was resolved, he said.

Chief executive of EasyPay, Serge Balamant, said the company had only found out that Absa had suspended its credit card transactions with EasyPay when he read about it in a report in Die Burger.

"We will investigate all our options because Absa's lack of transparency is costing us in our business and our credibility," Balamant told the Beeld.

EasyPay is a website which encrypts credit card users' information when they pay accounts, traffic fines or prepaid electricity, which should protect these details from internet fraudsters.

Mathias said EasyPay users could still conduct their transactions at EasyPay kiosks and supermarket chain stores.

FNB, which manages EasyPay transactions, had been notified that Absa was suspending the transactions.

FNB said it had not taken similar measures, although it was aware of the problem.

Police spokesperson Lt-Col Andre Traut said on Monday that the investigation had been handed over to the Hawks, who said they could not divulge any details of the investigation.

EasyPay posted a 'phishing' warning on its website, saying that customers should be vigilant against criminals who try to obtain confidential information.

The message said EasyPay users should be suspicious of email purporting to be from EasyPay requesting credit card details, as these were often send by perpetrators of internet fraud.

Yep, these are the clowns who you trust your money with :D Not good from FNB either. I get the impression that they're starting to slack lately.

Does Absa have their own switch with EasyPay? Otherwise the issue would be affecting more than just Absa clients. Then again, Standard Bank are so nonchalant about CC fraud that they probably have the fraud queries going straight to the Recycle Bin.

No. What is costing Easypay business is their 3 month old "New" site that does not work.

In August, for the first time in more than five years, I paid municipal accounts directly, after once again being unable to use Easypay.

Perhaps ABSA has just got sick of receiving complaints.

How difficult is it to pay municipal accounts in other provinces?

eThekwini seem to be on the ball, I just EFT the amount requested... no hastles.

By using a FNB credit card on Easypay you accumulate EBUCKS which is the equivlent of a 1% discount over an EFT transfer.

Tshwane accept credit card payments at their offices, but it used to be more convenient to pay via Easypay.

But I earn eBucks by spending using my Gold Cheque account don't I? Sorry quite new to the FNB/eBucks thing.

I agree. Their new website is illogical, unintelligible and difficult to use. It amazes me that they don't see that themselves. Their old site was easy to use.

Listening to 702 this evening, quite a few strong accusations from the EasyPay CEO (i.e. chargebacks from transactions with the usage of 3D secure). Since 3D secure is run by a "clearing house" (I think it's Bank Serve) and EasyPay has no access to 3d secure information it will be interesting to hear what ABSA's response to this is.

Also strange that the article mentions that EasyPay only noticed the suspension from an article in the newspaper - surely they would have noticed that all credit card transactions reported errors?

I think it is only for swiping debit cards, not EFT, but I stand to be corrected.

I think you're right.

Otherwise, let me transfer R20,000.00 to you .... you send it back ... I'll send it back ... and we'll do this until we accumulate enough to buy a gadget on Kalahari ;)

Easypay seem to be having problems with FNB as well now.

This is the EMail received when I tried to pay accounts on Easypay.

"FNB Transaction declined for security reasons. Please call our Authorisations department on 011 352 5910 for assistance."

The number is FNB's card fraud division.

You do know that you should use your own credit card when making payments, right?

The whole point of "Verified by Visa", which is what has caused Easypay's problems, is that there is login and password verification of the credit card payment.

Without password verification, any credit card can be used, it is only fraud when it is used illegally.

We regularly make payments online for MIL, who has no internet access.

And, yes I did phone the the card fraud number to verify that Easypay was having problems.(Again, Still??)

Alas City of Joburg does not accept credit cards. http://www.joburg.org.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=741&Itemid=168&limitstart=3

I just hope my 10k worth of payments gets picked up by the municipal.

+1. Yikes, just started paying COJ through Easypay in the last 30 days (3 CC Payments). Our winter electricity bills have been more than double. That's painful enough. I certainly would not want to have find out my payments dissappeared. Remember Twenty20 (operated by Saambou) around 2001. Some of my money was tied up for a good few months
