For about the last 6 months or so, every Sunday evening it feels like a gigantic black cloud descends upon me. And I don't mean just being in a foul or irritable mood, I mean absolutely depressed and I think it's gradually getting worse as time goes by. About three weeks ago while driving to Stellenbosch on a Sunday evening, I just broke out in tears and had to actually pull the car over until I could calm down.

The strange thing is, I have absolutely no idea why I feel like this, and I'm not a person who cries easily. I can't think of any one reason in the world why I should feel so down in the dumps. Yet every Sunday evening, like clockwork, I start feeling absolutely awful like this.

Anyone else have days where you just slip like this? I dunno what I'm even looking for with this thread. Advice? A possible explanation? Anyone?

How do you feel about going to work...

Advice for depression on the internet....this will end well for you.

I don't like Sunday afternoons but not in the "severe" sense you experience it (the dark clouds and tears). My explanation is that the next day is bloody Monday and I HATE bloody Mondays!

Realization that life is a bitch and then you die. Often most noticeable on a Sunday evening.

Sunday is THE WORST day of the week.

There is something about it that is just so 'meh'.

All days are the same for me. Mondays are best because then you can go to work and do something that will enable you to do other things.

How do you feel about going to work...

That's the thing. I don't even work yet. I'm still studying at Stellenbosch University. When looking at my life objectively, there's really nothing that should be making me feel like this. I enjoy my studies. I don't have any serious traumatic events in past. I've got a nice family life. All in all, I'd say I lead a rather happy life. Yet, every Sunday, BAM! Down in the pits. That's what makes it so strange and disconcerting.

Trust me, better the internet than bringing it up with my family. They're all devout Christians, so their only advice would be to pray. :p

Do you get enough sleep?

I find that when I get overtired, I get very down.

Do you drink on Saturdays? Depression is a common side-effect amongst many people after drinking. Otherwise, if it has hit the point where you feel helpless, then seek medical advice from a professional, not a forum. There is simply no way that you could divulge the necessary intimate details on a public forum like this. See a therapist - and not the hippie kind...

Was just about to ask if you drink on Saturdays... As DJ said there is a side effect for some people after they drink. But goodluck and all the best mate, i know depression is really terrible.

+1

Often not felt on Saturdays because there's still social going ons.

Well he could... But it wouldn't end well

Not to take away from the light-heartedness of your comment, but the fact of the matter is that nobody will ask the right questions, so at the end of the day there will be a mound of detail and very little to do with it. That one year of industrial psych at uni 20 years ago has made for quite a few pseudochologists all over the show...:D

Trust me when I say I know what you are going through and I feel very sorry that this is also happening to you.

  • First of all, stay away from Carte Blance. Watch an upbeat movie instead.
  • Try and focus your mind on positive things that you like to do which makes you happy. Your mind likes to follow set patterns, and once you have trained it on focusing on the negative things, it will only pull you in deeper.
  • It also helps if you have set a goal for yourself of something that you would like to do in the future and then work towards making that a reality in your spare time.
  • Don't spend too much time by yourself. One of the biggest joys in life is to share it with your loved ones.
  • Definitely take a trip overseas if you can afford it during a varsity holiday. That really changes your outlook on life.
  • Keep in mind that you are not the only one feeling like this on a Sunday evening - not by a long stretch. Several people I know also complained of the same thing.
If this feeling is happening more and more you have to go and see a professional to stop it from becoming full-blown depression, which will ruin the quality of your life. Pills are not always the answer, so only use it as a last resort. There are many other effective ways to combat it as well.

Hope this helps! :)

Agreed. And even if the right questions are asked, the answers will probably not be interpreted correctly

IMO anyone bursting into tears for no apparent reason whatsoever is already at the point of self-medicating/self-rejuvenation. Seek professional help immediately...

Have you considered that you may be a nutter or just maybe a bit unstable?
