Hey people

Well about an hour ago I saw a mysterious link in my AfriHost ClienZone, Show abuse report

So I clicked this link and got some long report telling me I had a copyright infringement against my IP and that my line will be suspended on the 11th! So after reading this LONG message. I finally got to the part where they tell me that it was some torrent that I downloaded: "UFC.152.Jones.vs.Belfort.DSR.XviD-XWT"

So after rapidly deleting the content and all affiliates I responded, saying that it has been deleted and that it wont happen again!

So what happened was, I did download the Video and some well organised company called Zuffa. Which own the copyright material for the UFC, noticed that I along with thousands of others had downloaded this and they contacted IS, which then contacted AfriHost and then contacted me!

So this is a WARNING! Do not EVER download any UFC content as this Zuffa company isn't playing around!

I am not complaining but IS has provided me with ****ty internet coz of insufficient IPC bandwidth for over a week. So they should maybe concentrate less on **** like this and more on Bandwidth prediction and their clients!

I know I was in the wrong and appropriate action was taken!

They do not have authority in South Africa, since their methods of tracking you is not whiten South Africa's laws, they can take no action against you legally, even if you did not delete it.

some reading for you to do.

many mybroadband users have received this in the past and have ignored it. Best action you can take to prevent this if you have to use torrents is to install Peerblock

From the article

Openweb founder Keoma Wright says that they also forward copyright infringement notices to their subscribers, but do so begrudgingly.

“The internet IS a torrent. Why create a monster, only to dress him in pink slippers and a Winnie the Pooh nighty?
lmao. Way to go Keoma.

Lol.. ignore it. They have no authority. Those are just scare notices. My ISP flat out ignores them. You dont have to do anything with them. Only ones we pay attention to are the spam ones.

Cool, TelkomInternet does not send out these notices, except if its from SAPS.

Openweb founder Keoma Wright says that they also forward copyright infringement notices to their subscribers, but do so begrudgingly.

“The internet IS a torrent. Why create a monster, only to dress him in pink slippers and a Winnie the Pooh nighty? Lawmakers should worry about the crime rate, as committing a murder is a lot more serious than downloading a movie about one,” said Wright.

Rock on Keoma!

Notice that he says in the OP his line was going to get suspended on the 11th. Not exactly something I'd tell someone to just ignore.

Surely they don't mean 'line' but rather 'account/data'? Also, I believe AfriHost requires you to acknowledge the notice or else they suspend your service. I stand to be corrected though.

Why can't they just start it off by selling content? I'm sure a lot of people will pay for the content they download, as long as the price is right (between $1 and $10), and not just some rip-off price ($100 and upwards).

Correct. Although the jury's still out on the "suspend" part though :D

Anybody willing to be a guinea pig? :D :D

I also found one of these notices today. Have acknowledged it etc. Lets see what happens.

MonoChoice would not agree. however... a south african netflix/hulu would be great.

MonoChoice control the Sat space rentals, not the entire entertainment industry.. Netflix in SA would be awesome, the infrastructure has already been created by DFA to cater for high-demand streaming applications such as this, but the ISP's don't want to bite.

MTN didn't provide any feedback on whether they forward these..

So it should be interesting to see if anyone gets these from Afrihost/Axxess now that they're on the MTN network.

Its a bluff. They cannot do anything to you. Its just scare tactics. You IP cannot be traced to your address with out the ISP help. So what happens is that the get you IP, send the letter to your ISP AND THEN your ISP forward it to you (because the ISP are the only ones that know your address). The people that sent you the letter have no idea who you are UNLESS YOU RESPOND. Your ISP cannot give away your details to this company without a court order and because they are mostly in different countries, that won't happen. Best to do is just ignore those type of letters.

Hi all,

I don't think the question should be whether it is illegal to download movies (we all know the answer) nor whether a foreign based company has any legal possibilities, but whether your ISP will discontinue their service should you choose to ignore the notice.

Has anyone been disconnected after a message?
