Abysmal downstream on 4Meg

ok, now im pi$$ed off and sad. my recently upgraded 4 meg line was fine for about a day. the router status showed 4096k downstream and my speed tests were inline with expectations.

But a short while ago, here is what my router status looked like :

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1696 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 14.1 db 14.0 db

and my speeds have plumetted!





I checked again now, and here is what it says :

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 864 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 9.8 db 13.0 db

and a neotel speed test makes for grim reading :

Download Speed: 627 kbps (78.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 401 kbps (50.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

please, i'm begging you people, help me fix this

Your noise margins are quite poor. If you disconnect your modem and reconnect, do you still get such poor speeds? If so, there is a problem on your line - you need to phone Telkom on 0800 375 375 and moan.

where are you trying to download from?

Is this with any download, or from a specific place?

Try a few local and international FTP sites and check the speeds.

If it is all over... then check all the wires on your property for rust damage.
