Abysmal pings. What is the root cause ??

I noticed that my Youtube has been buffering a lot lately and overall internet experience feels sluggish. does not seem to matter which ISP i use, which is why i am worried its due to contention at the exchange.

I did a PING and a TRACE below, and results look shocking what can i do to fix this ?

Could you give the router stats and at what times this has been happening?
Is this over ethernet or wireless? Have you tried unplugging all phones and removing the filters to check if that is the issue?
Have you borrowed a friends/neighbors router to test with?

this is over ethernet. i need to test out another router to see if there is any difference. will also try the unplugging of phone lines to see if that makes any difference

i have noticed something odd. if i restart the router, results are infinitely better :

this seems to last for a short while. after about 5 minutes, it ended up looking like this :

What are your router stats? Could either be a suspect router, or your line is really bad. What speed does it sync at?

line stats seem fine. I have updated above post with an image of line test results. will try out a different router and see if any change noticed. could it be exchange issue ? never used to be this bad.

edit :

okay, i swapped from a Telkom Netgear DGN2200, to an old Belkin N150. Speeds to be much better now. pings are 6ms and have been for a while. will continue to monitor.

any theory as to why the Telkom router is misbehaving ?

After a few weeks of blaming Afrihost for intermittent ping spikes, I've worked the problem down to the WIFI in my house. I'm still unsure whether it's the the WIFI NIC on my laptop or the TP-Link router. Seems like you've got a similar issue.

OP says the connection is over ethernet.

Could be exchange related - have you checked for line noise / checked pots filters.

problem is almost certainly the router. all other variables the same (isp, filters, etc) and only thing changes is the router. check out THESE results!
