I see that Esquire have now launched the AC Ryan DVR HD as well.

They are bundling it with a 1 TB Hitachi HDD, all for R 2 299 excl vat.

Anyone gonna be buying this?
Pros/Cons anyone who has done some research on similar players?

Went to the Esquire site but didn't see anything under DVR's on this? what's the specs?
 
What advantage does the DVR have over the standard ?

From what I understand, it just has the ability to record content that is broadcast over DVB-T (which isn't much !)

It can also record from AV input as well, thus from your dstv decoder... Unfortunately it seems only able to record in SD, but I would take that anyday rather than having to pay a company R50 a month to be able to watch anything I recorded.

Are you happy with it? I have a Mede8er and it looks as if it is the same as the Playon!HD just different name and software. How is the support for the Playon? I am considering adding another to the tv in my bedroom, but will rather have a look at this DVR for only a bit more.
 
is this able to record sabc and e via the aerial port? it says it has a tuner....
 
It can only record DSTV via the RCA cable. Not sure about the others
 
This is a great machine, got mine yesterday from esquire @1699 and 1TB samsung @399. It picked up all sabc TV and radio... etv was audio only for some reason. Mnet will have to come in via the AV.
The interface is easy. Uploaded some movies from my sisters hdd without a pc and was able to view them no problem.
Really impressed

Got me a PV76120 as well. There is currently a test DVB-T signal in Joburg. I could not pick up ETV at all but could pick up a lot of indigenous radio stations none enjoyable.

I do hope we go DVB-T for digital and not the Brazilian standard.

Here is my initial impression of the device.
 
does it work?

can't see a definitive answer anywhere - does the AC Ryan DVR record DSTV easily and well? we have a PVR but want to be able to record straight to our media player so we can store for longer and in a more user friendly way.

we are not that tech-savvy either, so need something easy to install and use.

It does but not in HD.

Also what you can do its use it to "backup" stuff you recorded from your PVR. That way you can clean up your PVR and still keep the movies on DVR.
 
Yes - it records DSTV and saved PVR programmes with no problems.

Used it to move the rugby off my PVR onto disk.

Now, does anyone know where I can get it at the lowest price? tried Esquire but they said the myBB deal closed 3 months ago. it's about 2 grand with 2TB HDD. and about 4 grand for 1.5TB HDD on Expansys.

any ideas?
 
also, what HDD to get? want an internal HDD, 2TB but am confused by the loads of options out there - some seem to be better for DVR than others? advice urgently needed!!!

I wish I could buy for Esquire as prices are SO good. but am not a company and they tell me the myBB deal is over :(
