Does anyone have experience with the program "net transport"? and I just want to know if using a download accelerator program will have any effect on a DSL512 connection?

Sweet Sweet

Not sure about the effect on 512 but my understanding of accelerators is that if they work you will just reach your cap earlier. Depending on what you use your link for maybe not such a good idea.

No - accelerators should delay you reaching your cap earlier because accelerators work by decreasing the bandwidth that you use which is how they accelerate your connection.

Generally - as I understand it - download accelerators work by splitting the file into multiple segments and then concurrently downloading these segments. This way you are able to utilize more of your bandwidth at a given time.

You’re still downloading the same size file though so it wouldn’t make any difference in how much of your cap you were using in total. However, over time, you would be able to download more – were it not for the cap….

You might be confusing this with services such as Mweb's acccelerator which compresses data on the server side before sending it down to you which allows webpages alone to load faster as there is now less data to transmit. Such programs are redundant on ADSL afaik.

minor, if at all.

most accelerators use three systems, image quality reduction (so they reduce the quality you get, this is not done on stand alone systems, but on ISP based ones. so don't worry about it), caching (SAIX already runs a proxy, so you may gain a slight bit but not much), and read ahead (auto loads pages in the background. eats more bandwidth. makes things seem faster).

I am talking about accelerators which compress on the server side and decompress on the client side and vice versa. Why would ADSL make that redundant?

Most accelerators of this nature also give you the option to adjust the parts that are compressed. For example you can opt to receive very low quality images on web pages which reduce bandwidth and increase speed.

I don't understand why this would be redundant on ADSL?

I'm standing by to be corrected... :)

If you are talking about a web accelerator, I use a software called Artera. It works great with my dsl connection

Artera

Artera, also has a download doubler feature that splits the file so it downloads faster.

Walter: I'm reading about them now on their web site. They don't push DSL much although I can see it being just as good a product on DSL.

Who is your ISP - although I assume that this is ISP independent - just curious?

Also - how long have you been using this for and what sort of bandwidth saving have you seen?

And another question: Which ADSL speed package are you on?

I use Verizon dsl 1.5/384. Artera has increased my speed from 1.5M to about 4M. I also use a Nextel wireless modem for my laptop. That works at about 52-56k. Artera speeds that up to about 400k when downloading. I don't know about any other bandwidth source but Artera says it can speed up just about any connection. I love the product, it works well for me.

Artera

Artera is ISP independent. You just install the software, and your off and running. I've been using it for about 1 year.

When trying to download the trial it gives me some geographical locations to chose from of which africa is not one. Where did you pretend to be from?
