Acceptable Speeds on a FTTH service?

RSAWEB supply a Mikrotik from what i know and they don't know how to set them up correctly. We had for months issues where our line would negotiate to 25 meg when it should be 50meg business. In the end our IT consultant knew someone at RSAWEB and they left us on uncapped and the reason was they were unsure how to cap the line on 50meg and keeping it at 50. So our local now runs at like 650 and international about 100

Building this sort of shaping Queue and managing it would be a nightmare.

I wouldn't recommend them... this situation went on for like 8 months and they were billing us R5500 per month for a 50/50 line running at 25/25... their support were clueless. When our contract ended they took 6 months to change us to a new price (R2400) so they billed us for those 6 months at R5500 and refused to give us a credit...

I wasn't being serious. I heard not-so-good things about them as well, irrespective of their self-proclaimed "Best rated ISP.." rating, which isn't supported by the reviews I've seen.

The 50/50 & 100/100 would have marginal differences when conducting speed tests (via Speedtest.net and Fast.com) which tested (lower) by between 5 - 8Mbps depending on the day, and always tested from a computer connected via ethernet cable to the router.

That's probably not a bad result, but...

Speedtest.net is not a great test. I think it defaults to multiple tcp streams.

On Octotel, you should be able to skip the router and test in the ONT (if you're not stuck with legacy PPPoE).

Try testing with iPerf, check the max speed of a single tcp session. Check if you can get 80% of line speed with a UDP test without packet loss.

Thanks for the comment and suggestion. Just been swamped with work since this post, and now I'm waiting for all the internet outages to be resolved before I follow this up again. My ISP is also rolling out a firmware update as of Sunday, so perhaps that will play a role as well.
