Hi

I recently got accepted at Denel to study and become an aircraft mechanic.

The things is, they want a reply by 11 December. I just finished matric this year so I have no idea if I've gotten accepted at any universities.

I'd just like to know if there are actually jobs for aircraft mechanics in South Africa before I make a decision.

Also, I'd be grateful if anyone could give me companies or programmes that could offer me a bursary to study at Denel

Don't know too much about local jobs, but there is quite a large demand in Oz, Europe and the US of A, last I heard.

Also I can't imagine a situation where having Denel on your Cv would be a bad thing.

Go for it.

Aircraft maintenance experience seems to have decent traction overseas...certainly more than the average SA qualification. Not sure about SA but definitely seems one of the safer bets globally.

That said its mixed too...friend of mine went for it and ended up somewhere in germany...yet I recently encountered someone doing barbershop duty as she got pushed out of her air mech job. So its not entirely foolproof.

Just stay far away from SAA...

Actually SAA technical is one of the only divisions doing well at SAA and by what I hear worth working for. They are the only aircraft maintenance company in the region and have among the following as clients,

South African Airways
LAM
SonAir
Air Namibia
TAAG Angola
British Airways Comair
Mango
South African Express
Interair
Air France
Air Zimbabwe
Trans Air Congo
Kulula
Rwandair
Iberia Airlines
KLM
Lufthansa
Quantas
TAAG
Turkish
Air Austral
Air Cargo Germany
Air France
Air Madagascar
Air Mauritius
Air Namibia
Arik Air
British Airways
CARGOLUX
EDELWEISS
Egypt Air
EL - AL
Emirates
GSS
Kenya Airways
LAM
Air Berlin
Qatar
Thai Airways

Have you fallen on your head and because of it have some mental disability?

Go do it, you have the offer of a life time. If in 5 -10 years you want to do something else then go study... Damn son, your dad needs to slap you against the head :p (You obviously applied because you wanted to do it)

I would say do your homework and contact the airlines and gauge the possibility of work.

The previous job I was in (left 3-4 months ago) I worked with 1 black guy and 1 white guy that had both been aircraft mechanics and were currently where I was working because they couldn't find work. The only possibility of work they said was overseas contracts. The one wouldn't do it because he didn't have the cash to get overseas and the other guy said the overseas contracts are *** as they put you in the middle of nowhere and you spend 16-18 hours a day 6 days a week working (he had a family so couldn't do that anymore anyway).

How reliable the info is I cannot say as we were working in a different industry but I'm sure they wouldn't be doing menial work (building cabinets, cables etc) if they could get jobs in their profession.

Denel internship would be coupled with a work to repay scheme. So they give him work for a minimum of X amount of years for them providing him with the studies. After that he can stay on or resign and go somewhere else. Or if he wants to leave early, buy himself out of the contract. Similar to how mines do apprenticeships.

Why would you need a bursary to study at Denel? Isn't the entire idea that they employ you while they teach you?

In my view you hit the jackpot. Absolutely there is a big market for aircraft technicians, world wide.

But, the question is more, what do you want to do. Are you sure this is the career you want to do, or did you just dream up some stuff and applied and see what happens and were shocked that you were accepted.

My nr piece of advice, it is crucial that you find the career path for you. Trust me, life is hell if you land in a career you hate. You must find a career that you love to do. Life is short. I always say, I rather work in a career I love for very little pay, than to work in a career I hate, for plenty of pay.

I think determine first what you want to do. It is a big waste spending money and time to study and only then find out it is not what you wanted to do.

You also give no indication what it will cost to study at Denel.
