[V] What do I need to do to be able to access my home PC from work with something like, Terminal Service? I've just got the Telkom ADSL router in place and not an extra FW, I run WinXP SP2 on my PC

Hi

Visit http://www.realvnc.com/

It might well be what you need.

Cheers

### What we need in South Africa is cheap 24/7, always on Internet for under R300 a month. ###

On the pots router you need to set the static bridge parameters to forward ATM1-4 to a valid mac address (your xp box) on your local area network, then setup PAT to send traffic coming into your router on a particular port to a port on your xp box, sp2 on xp will require the opening of ports on your pc as well(security centre firewall) before you can send trafic to it.Also dont forget you will need to setup an account with a dynamic dns provider, and have a piece of software update the ip address to their database from your pc, there are lots to choose from, and plenty are evn free (the ip update software also)

what adsl modem have you got?
I have succesfully setup vnc with dyndns. If you need more info contact me

www.no-ip.com

Simple and the client side software even connects to the internet if the session gets interupted.

Thus your home PC will have a static domain name linked to the changing IP because the DNS server is constantly notified of any changes.

The rest is up to whatever you want to do.

henkb, i tried to contact you via email but the mail got returned???? can you please contact me asap, as i would like to get the setup, and i'm using the telkom adsl router (marconi)

I've done it eventually!

1. Register at www.dyndns.org for a dynamic dns
2. Install dynsite on home pc
3. provide credentials when installing for dyndns
4. setup PAT on router for remote desktop
5. add ports to winxpsp2fw
6. create account on winxp
7. login from work!

AND it works like a bomb

Thats great, but in a similar situation.... only trying to use SSH port 22 for Linux computer to develop on it.

This just doesnt connect

Looking for a simple VNC solution? (This is for Windows only, I think)

Try http://www.logmein.com. I've used this from my office to control my home PC over ADSL. Works quite well, and its free in the basic form. Does eat your cap though [:(]

I'm going to ask RPM if we can have a separate forum for all things related to Static & Dynamic IPs, usually there is very little ADSL/MyWireless/iBurst specific stuff, it is mostly just DynDNS.

Having said all that I have a problem with No-IP.com, and I don't have a complicated setup at all.
