A mate of mine just had his account hacked, his two level 70 characters had all of their items stolen and were effectively left naked in two high level places.

What I'd like to know is how do these people hack the accounts? Is it a problem of Blizzards side? My mate was on a private DMZ with a NAT firewall(?).

I was under the impression that rootkits were controlled by corporates? Or are they being exploited by hackers?

You can be behind a Firewall and run brilliant Anti-virus software and still get your account hacked.
All it takes is one click on the wrong link.

Tell your friend to visit less dodgy sites. Or rather be wise & condomise...aka use firefox and not IE.

Keylogger would be a more accurate description than rootkit imo.

Chances are, the keylogger is still on his PC...so he should make a plan there else its gonna happen again in a few months.

I'll forward these questions to him, what is a good spyware/keylog detector?

and good luck for him getting a response soon, i reported mine 3 weeks back, no mail nothing, so i phoned them, they told my anything up tp 8 weeks, but a minimun of 3 took look into it

and mine acc is frozen till the investigstion is completed

Use a combination of Firefox and NoScript (addon for Firefox).
Most keyloggers are installed by using an unsecured browser (IE). A while back a compromised ad infiltrated the banners on Curse, where if u were using ie and merely hovered your mouse over the banner, the logger was installed.

I've been gaming WoW for 2 and a half years and never so much as a hint of being hacked. It simply comes down to Internet savvy and awareness (like not clicking banners, learning to recognise dodgy urls, keeping your windows, antivirus and firewall software updated etc etc)

porn sites, who has time for those when you play wow the whole day.

I checked my main pc and did not find anything, but sometime i use my old pc, if i boost my 2nd acc with my 1st or vice/versa, and the old one has the flippin logger, cant believe it took me 2 week to figure out how they go my info.

That's what a dual screen setup is for. Also, roll a pally. ;)

Most of the wow hacking comes from mods. Dont use mods that are distributed in anything other than a zip file. And check that the zip file doesnt contain any .com, .bat, .exe etc...

And that it doesn put files outside of your WoW addons folder.

Should only have .lua, .xml and some other file types, which I cant recall right now.
