Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance on Thursday welcomed the suspension of the Gauteng economic development department's head, Khulu Radebe.

"Last year the DA raised the red flag over the department's failure to place 10 000 youth in jobs due to budgetary constraints and delays in setting up the programme management office," DA MPL Jack Bloom said on Thursday.

"The department also failed to spend R23.3m in key economic development programmes."

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane announced Radebe's suspension on Thursday.

"[Khulu] Radebe is suspended for non-performance and lack of accountability on some of the key youth development programmes," her office said in a statement.

Mokonyane said several youth employment projects and entrepreneurship development programmes had collapsed.

She vowed to continue to hold government officials accountable and act decisively against under- or non-performance.

Well done Nomvula Mokonyane. Now to round up the rest of the liabilities...

Now before you comment on something inevitably negative, remember that this is good news for a change, and it is Friday. Embrace it, enjoy it and applaud it...

So why is she not fired over the CoJ billing fiasco? As premier she takes ultimate responsibility.

usually for quite an extended period

Crazy, they should make them work still but in a (literally) crappy job like on the cleaning crew. If they don't do well at that job then fire them outright.

Responsibility and accountability are such western and thus 'un-African' words, usually only undertaken or understood by 'clever blacks' while trying to become white by shaking off their African roots.

Don't look at me, those are your prez's words ..

Knowing how these politicians operate, I would suspect that the real reason for his suspension was something else, i.e. something internal to the ANC. Trust me, if he was a "true brother" and in the right camp if you know what I mean, they would not fire him in a 100 years.

Of all the people to put the negative spin on this, you were the 4th last I expected...:p

:D Haters gonna hate. I listened to a radio program on suspended government employees being forced back into working as they arbitration just took so long it made me sense to have them back at work and doing something rather than sitting at home and getting free monies.

There are a few tricks they always employ. They delay as long as humanly possible, then they don't have a lawyer, so the hearing has to be postponed. Then they get sick, then their lawyer gets sick etc.
