Hi, I wanted to find out if there are many software developers that use accountants or maybe lets call it more financially orientated people on their teams when developing software/web applications and what would such a job typically be advertised as?

Reason... I'm working for an auditing firm now for my 11th year but have a strong interest in the I.T field... I'm looking for that "working for software company that needs financial knowledge" or someone that would be able to check / test if their financial side of their application make sense or work and are user friendly.... but I don't see that type of job being typically advertised...

Any info would be great...

A lot of software developers who develop accounting systems are usually B.Com or B.BusSci graduates who majored in Information Systems and therefore have a lot of accounting knowledge as well.

Skill yourself up in project management and business analysis, and you could start adding value.

Ideally, yes you would have software developers who also studied accounting, but in reality, few software developers have.

Your expert domain knowledge of accounting would make you a useful business analyst, but to add value there, you would need to know about system development.

I have a BCom degree and I completed my articles. I changed to IT about 15 years.

I think my accounting and auditing experience did give me some skills in systems analysis. I also understand business processes because of my experience in auditing in various sectors, manufacturing, insurance, retail specifically. This makes it easier to understand business requirements.

However, I cant say that accounting knowledge has made any difference. But my auditing knowledge and experience has defiantly been a benefit.

I have one employee with a B.Com Acc and another with a B.Acc degree in my company. We develop financial systems and even with their limited IT knowledge they are invaluable. Have no idea how to describe the position though.

I focused on accounting and finance during my studies and less so on software. I have a M.Com degree by the way.

Well I have a Btech in Financial Information systems and doing saipa articles as well as CISM through my current company.

Typically the role would be an Analyst (typically Business Analyst) type role. In some organisations, Analysts are also involved in testing to make sure the product meets requirements.
You would need to upskill on requirements writing, etc.

I was thinking I would probably have to get into the financial systems developers side.... Will start looking..

Hello, krono9! You know, I must to tell that I have been working as the accountant for a few years in Ukraine, and I do not use the help of the softwear developers, because I do just use one great program in my work, it is enough simple in using and you can program a lot of useful things for accountants using it. I have found the english version for you in the internet, if you are interested in that of course http://risebiz.co.za/1C_Enterprise/ I'm sure you will love it if you will try. But of course I have some programming skills but I have got it by myself reading the specific literature in the internet. I am sure there must be a lot of all kinds of useful programs in the internet which you could find, but this one program that I use I can advise to you if you want to make the programs for accountants.

The developers in our company do not necessarily have in-depth financial/accounting/etc knowledge, but there is enough support structures around them (such as analysts) to give them the information they require in order to further develop the software.

It definitely helps me though, to have a financial background when I develop software and so forth to meet the requirements set by our clients.
