ACER Aspire 5710 - WinXP installation error

Hi there.

I'm installing windows xp for my friend.
His laptop ACER Aspire 5710 had Vista Home preloaded and he didn't like it.
When I boot from WIN XP CD and try to install, it does not detect the hard disk which is 160GB.
I tried to boot from win98 and winme and do the partition first, but no luck.

Any ideas?
 
Seems like the HD is SATA. You need to get the SATA drivers and install it before the setup (when it asks you to press F6 to install 3rd party software).
 
anyone have luck with this? I'm thinking of buying one, but would also prefer XP at this stage.
 
Success with Acer TravelMate 5710 and Windows XP

A friend requested I help them install XP onto a Acer TravelMate 5710.

I downloaded the "F6 Intel Sata HDD Floppy Driver Utility" from the Acer website: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_5710.html
I downloaded nLite from http://www.nliteos.com/

I extracted the files from the floppy driver utility by unzipped the .exe file, and mounting the .IMA file that pops out. I used linux to do this:
# mount F32.IMA -o loop /mnt
(then copy the files out of /mnt)

On another windows machine, I installed nLite (and .NET framework) and unpacked a WinXP installation CD to a folder. I used nLite to add in the SATA drivers that were insite the F32.IMA file. I compiled the iso, and burnt it.

The new customised WinXP cd installed perfectly.

Is there any other way to do this without Linux? I don't have access to a machine with Linux on it. I have used Nlite before so I can manage that part. Maybe I will just pick up a usb floppy.
