The machine has a low-power Intel Atom processor and 8 GB of flash memory. A pricier model (R500 extra) with a 120 GB hard drive is available.

Netbooks are all the rage. These cheap, low-powered machines are the most exciting development to hit the PC industry in some time. Kickstarted by Asus's already legendary Linux-based Eee PC, the netbook market is becoming crowded.

Taiwanese computer maker Acer is the latest to joint the race, introducing the more powerful, but more expensive, Aspire One. The machine has a low-power Intel Atom processor and 8 GB of flash memory. A pricier model (R500 extra) with a 120 GB hard drive is available.

Users have the choice of Linpus, a version of Linux adapted for the machine by Acer, or Microsoft Windows XP Home (Aspire One is not powerful enough to run Vista properly). The Windows version adds R500 but includes 1 GB of RAM.

We liked both versions, though with Linpus Acer has installed old versions of OpenOffice.org and the Firefox Web browser - and upgrading these is not trivial. The Linux version is not recommended for anyone who is not confident working at the command line.
