Acer aspire switch or ipad air

If it's just for email and web browsing, Acer Aspire Switch would be fine, if more than that then Ipad Air.

Ipad Air may be cooler & more fun, or some people its brand conscious. It does not necessarily mean its better than Acer. It can do everything Ipad can. Switch 10 would suit most users practical needs with a very attractive offer value for money. Depending on what you want to use it for,
the Switch 10 is a hybrid of tablet & laptop, while Air is tablet only.
When compared to an iPad Acer Aspire Switch 10 wins in most every case where productivity is needed. The reason is, you get full Microsoft Office with all the keyboard shortcuts which make you that much quicker at working. The iPad version of Office is extremely limited and Google Docs still aren’t at the level of polish as what Microsoft delivers.

The Switch 10 is a decent laptop and a poor tablet. The ipad is a good tablet and a poor laptop. The iPad is just as extensible as the Switch though with attachments.

It is still stripped down from desktop, but not by a whole lot - and honestly if I wanted the full Office I'd rather use a large sized machine to work on.

That's your opinion. You can still work on a tablet using full office with windows 8, I've never experience any problems with it. and honestly if I wanted to full software of everything of every category I'd rather use a large PC to work on everything, if I'm always on the move or traveling I would use a tablet. How you want it or prefer it is your choice, if you prefer this, then go for it. Not everyone will go for Ipad Air or Acer Switch, it depends what they can afford and which best suit their needs.
You get limited features with the free versions. To get the full power of the Office apps you'll need a subscription with Office 365.
I have a Asus Tf101 with detachable keyboard, a bit cheaper than the Acer, but basically the same thing. I use it for e-mail and browsing while stuck in meetings at work and it performs adequately. When the keyboard is detached it makes for a decent tablet experience, but nothing close to an Ipad air. It has a full sized USB port in the keyboard which is also a plus. The Keyboard and touch pad are ok but I get frustrated by the small keys and cramped layout when working for longer periods ( I have biggish hands). But this will be the same on any 10 inch keyboard I suppose.
