Hi
I'm looking at getting the Acer Iconia A501 (32gb, WiFi + 3G) from Australia, it costs $799 so in rands its approximately R5760. Any comments on the product and price? Also I want to enquire, if I take the WiFi only (A500) model, will a 3G USB Modem work in it?
Lastly, I've been reading it seems like there's hardly any apps that are optimised for the honeycomb os, is it worth it to get a tablet with honeycomb?

Thanks a lot
Regards

I played a bit with the WIFI only version at Incredible Connection. I quite like it, I especially like all of the ports on it.

AFAIK 3G dongles wont work out of the box, if you hack it you might get it to work. See here: http://tabletroms.com/forums/showthread.php?951-3G-usb-dongle-support-on-your-A500 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1134

If you are going WIFI only, also consider the Asus Transformer tablet (sells for just over 4k).
Have a look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMd1xKq_T14 (Acer Iconia Tab vs. Asus Eee Pad Transformer)

It also looks like some guys managed to get certain 3G dongles to work on the Transformer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151097

Thx Park@82, I might as well get the 3G model, its not so much more expensive. I'm just worried now about the honeycomb os, I've never used it but I've been told that there isn't many apps for it. Can any honeycomb user give me more info on it?

Its true that there are not many Apps that is designed for it nativly but most if not all Android apps work on it, some just look a tad stretched. For what I want on my device I find decent Honeycomb apps.

There is some games like https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vectorunit.bluedemo that is designed to run on the tablets brings console quality games, and yes there is a limited number of those titles out now but I suspect more is to follow seeing that Nvidia assisted in bringing the Unreal Engine across for the Tegra based devices.

The question should be what do you want to do with it and I can say if there is Honeycomb Specific Applications for those functions.

Asus Eee Pad user and Happy about my tablet.

Thanx Elimentals, probably basic photo editting, I heard that adobe got a decent photo editor for android, office documents editting, games (will browse the link u provided) gps (just a basic 1 in case of emergency... :D).
So basically, the apps for previous versions of android would work on 3.0, just some of them cannot be adjusted proportionally to fit the screen size?
Thanks

That is basically it, Example MyBB app works 100% and the app fills the screen but you know they could have done so much more if they developed a native app for the tablet.

For photo Editing I haven't found a decent app that works with the tablet yet, but then I have access to an iPad and use that by my PC for this exact use. Android does have Adobe Photoshop Express but not Adobe Nav or Adobe Eazel yet.

Edit: See http://www.photoshop.com/products/mobile and yes I am a tad p'ed off at them for not having android versions yet.

Thanks for the info Elimentals. Really appreciate it. :)

That's a awesome list Park@82, seems to have most of the apps I would use the tablet for. I'm going to decide soon and hopefully get it. Just shopping around for prices. The store I've been to does not know if the Acer Guarantee would be applicable in South Africa though.

One of the sales people at Incredible Corruption told me that Acer have global warranties. So even if you import a product on your own and its considered a grey import, Acer will still honour that warranty. However, I dont know how true that is...
