Acer laptop opinions

Hi, whats the general consensus on Acer laptops are they a half decent build quality and reliable?

Personally I think Acer is crap. I had an acer laptop and an Acer pda, both where crap.
Rather go Asus.

My FIL and Sister have/had Acer notebooks as well with no problems.

all better than my hp in my opinion.

IMHO Acer is one of the better brands out there, and very well priced.

Yeah, Acers: The VW Beetles of the pc world. Been around for years, reliable if a little plain. Built down to a budget, not up to a standard. They have their quirks like any brand, but I'd buy one. Don't expect a Mercedes Benz for the price, though.

I tried a very nice looking Acer laptop last year. It had good specs, good sound, but after playing with it for an hour my hands started to sweat from the heat. It was clearly not a good design in that respect, even though it won a design award. Their support is not great either.

my acer's hdd recently crashed as well as the web cam breaking, luckily it was 4 days before the warranty expired

Haven't had much problems from mine. Having said that though - when considering another one, 2 issues may have me looking at something else:
1. It runs somewhat hot. Its not limiting but can be a little offputting
2. Getting a replacement Acer battery is somewhat difficult to come by, as there are limited places that provide them, and costs are somewhat higher. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but from the comments I've got from the various places, Acer parts are limited and somewhat scarce in availabililty..

Depends where you are, if you are not close the Acer and something goes wrong you might as well write it off as you will end up paying to get warranty repairs.

The laptop comes with a 1 year collect repair and return warranty, for an extra R1K you can make that a 3 year warranty.
Acerdirect.co.za sell batteries and so forth (never had a stock problem).

My boss is in the states now and can pick up a laptop for me there...

What do you folks think of this acer going for $500 ?

Is it worth getting there for R4k?

Never had any problems and we run some old P4's right up to the 18.4" quad core jobbies. Are still looking at the i5/7 range for the next upgrade round.

I have a travelmate at home, Its 100x easier on the eye than the crappy Compaq nc6320 the work game me. Apart from it getting hot, it doesnt bend and creak like the Compaq... which feels like a cheap toy made in china.

I have an Acerand a HP, the HP is by far the worst laptop.
Dunno why someone said support is terrible, i had an old 19"lcd , 2.5yrs old and the backlight started flickering, acer came to my door the next morning, fetched it, fixed it and brought it back and this lcd had a carry in warranty to incredible!
