ok so i want to backup my dvd collection in digital format, found acid dvd ripper, starting ripping last night but think i got a setting wrong. the quality is terrible and the sound suck as well. anybody used this before? they say you must change the bits/px rate but i have no idea to what? please help!

Rather use DVDDecrypter and Handbrake. It is by far the best way to get lossless quality mpeg versions of dvds.

That or just download BDVDRips of the things you want. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, it may actually be faster. (A decent PC with DVDDecrypter + Handbrake will take around 3 hours per DVD for 3 passes)

i tried handbrake but only getting the cli package? will try the both combined and see what i get right, thank you!

just a thought but it's easier just to download a DVDrip than fiddle with settings and then copy each dvd one by one.
but if you wanna take the long route also make sure you ripping to a decent format like mkv or something, saves you on size but you keep the quality, but do more than 2 passes also, the higher the bits the better the quality but the more size it take up and the longer it takes to rip.
But if you want to back up your dvd collection you want to keep the quality so take your time and do it right.

What version of Linux are you using? Handbrake has worked well for me for a couple of years now. Set it to "high profile" and rip, no need to fiddle with settings.

Ripped my collection using Handbrake – it works well. A few comments:

- Make sure that you have the a/v codecs installed. On Ubuntu these are referred to as the restricted extras.-
On Linux you should not need DVDDecrypter, just rip the disc directly using Handbrake.
- Turn on the decomb feature in the picture settings. This will handle the de-interlacing, but only acts when it is actually needed. You might as well have it turned on for all rips.
- Make sure to pick an audio bitrate that you are happy with to avoid having to rip again to a higher quality. The standard bitrate is on the low side (at least for my taste).
- You can store the above preferences as a new profile that you simply select for each new rip.
- There are both CLI and command line versions of Handbrake. Did you possibly install the CLI version?

Code:
sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk

If it's not in the repos add the handbrake PPA,
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Clean the disc, you might also have one of those that has an additional layer of copy protection in which case dvdfab is in your future.
