Hi guys,

I play a fair amount of sport including soccer, cricket, squash and volleyball and have recently injured my knee. After undergoing physio and having xrays and an ultrasound nothing major was picked up but my knee was still not right. As a result I went to a specialist (Dr Jaffe) and had an MRI which indicated that I have torn my ACL, probably an old knee injury that I had four or five years ago which has been aggrevated this year while playing 5-a-side.

So my questions are:

  • Does anyone have any advise for me, I have done a bit of research and seen that the repair can been done using a section of the hamstring or the patella but the hamstring leaves a smaller scar as it is done using keyhole and there is a faster recovery time when compared to the patella.
  • Can you reccomend any surgeons, bearing in mind that I live in Johannesburg, my appointment was with Dr Jaffe at Olivedale who seemed good?

Thanks in advance!

I had the hamstring tendon option over a decade ago. Very quick recovery....was mobilised and made to walk the passages and stairs of clinic the morning after surgery. Sport clinic in rosebank.

I went for a knee op as a kid with the orthopedic surgeon at the Rosebank Sports clinic. Think his name was Dr. Ferguson - stand to be corrected though. He came highly recommended and was better than the butcher at Mulbarton Hospital (Dr Ho)

My friend tore his ACL and was told he would never be able to perform high intensity exercise again. Thankfully though, he had reconstructive surgery (can't remember the doctors name, sorry) and now he's able to perform just as well as he used to :)

All the best.
