anyone used these - opinions ?
so my one amp (yamaha av receiver) came with one, but i never bothered to use / try it.
the amp is normally set to "straight" - bypassing "tone" setting, giving a flat output.
the other night i was foraging about and happened upon the microphone supplied with this receiver - with nothing better to do, i figured to give it a try.
for those unfamiliar with these things - you plug the microphone into a specific input, and the amplifier sends out a variety of test tones, separately via each speaker, does a bit of maths, then figures out what it assumes to be the optimal settings for the speakers / room.
sounds like a bit of a "snake oil" exersise, but i gave it a go - twice.

so once it was completed (on both occasions), i went to look at the equaliser settings. (it saves it's settings as an additional sound profile).
on both occasions it reduced bass output and increased midrange and high end marginally.
difficult to articulate but assume a scale of 0 -10, 0 being minimum, 5 being flat & 10 being max
decrease in bass by about 2
increase midrange by about 3
increase treble by 2
but what do my ears have to say ?
well, for tv audio (dstv etc) - i far prefer what yamaha has figured out, but for music playback, it's back to the "straight" (flat) setting.
now i toggle between the two , depending on what is playing.
i thought i would take things a step further and try fox the microphone.
for this, i dragged a great big armchair between the left speaker and microphone, and left the right side as it was (mic in line of sight of the right speaker).
clearly not to be outwitted, the amp ran the signal test twice, of its own accord.
the result was quite interesting, it applied different equaliser settings to each of the two speakers.
right speaker remained unchanged, but left speaker had bass unchanged, and both midrange and treble lifted by an additional point (from its previous setting).
an interesting exersize !
